How can you make a difference?

 The Government of Kenya through the Ministry of health, Division of Nutrition and Dietetics (DND) initiated the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) in 2008 and developed the National Guideline for Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition, in the same year (final version disseminated in 2009) to assist health workers in the assessment and appropriate management of services and/or counselling for the treatment of Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). To support the implementation of the IMAM programme, Job Aids including trainers guide, IMAM handbook, IMAM Wall charts, IMAM flip chart, IMAM reporting tools and an IMAM data base were developed in 2010.

In 2016, revision of the National IMAM guidelines was initiated to reflect changes in the new developments in Management of Acute malnutrition. A final version of the revised guideline is in place.

UNICEF would like to engage a consultant to develop a package of standardized modular training course material on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) for Kenya using the using the WHO Training Course on the Management of SAM, 2009  template which provides standardized and comprehensive training course material on the management of acute malnutrition using adult learning methodology and which encompasses adequate clinical practice sessions and therefore contribute significantly to the improvement of quality of care for acute malnutrition in Kenya.  While the WHO training course on the Management of SAM, 2009 will be used as template for development of the course materials, all of the content will be taken from the updated National IMAM guideline for Kenya.

 Scope of Work:

Goal and Objective:  Under the supervision of the Chief of Nutrition Section, the consultant will support the development of package of standardized modular training course material on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) for Kenya taking into consideration adult learning methodology and encompass adequate practice sessions.

• Provide details/reference to RWP areas/UNDAF output covered: This assignment links with UNDAF output 3.2: By 2022, women, caregivers and community health workers in vulnerable counties have improved nutrition knowledge and skills for enhanced behavior and practices at community level and UNICEF Output 1.2: In 10 or more disadvantaged counties health workers and other service providers have improved resources and skills to provide quality service, care and counselling on maternity and common child illness, immunization, HIV, sanitation, stunting prevention, ECD, and SAM treatment.
• Activities and Tasks: 
  • Hold an entrance meeting with UNICEF to receive a brief on the assignment and provide any clarifications
  • In consultation with Emergency Nutrition Advisory Committee (ENAC), develop a detailed work plan to outline the approach in developing the package of standardized modular training course material on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM).
  • Hold Consultative meetings and or workshops with stakeholders  (Emergency Nutrition Advisory Committee (ENAC) of the Ministry of health and county level representatives)to consolidate inpiuts  and develop the package of standardized modular training course material on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) for Kenya taking into consideration adult learning methodology and encompass adequate practice sessions.
  • Update stakeholders on progress at both national and county on a regular basis
  • Build consensus and validation activities on all draft documents, presentations to the ENAC
  • Pilot the developed standardized modular training course material on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) for Kenya and  make adjustments based on learnings from the pilot.
  • Finalize and validate through ENAC the package of standardized modular training course material on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) for Kenya.
  • Submit the validated materials and consultancy report to UNICEF for review
  • Incorporate inputs by UNICEF and submit final report to UNICEF
• Work relationships: 
  • The consultant will work under the overall supervision of the Chief of Nutrition Section
  • The consultant will work with UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Health through the Division of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Emergency Nutrition Advisory Committee. 
  • The Chief of Nutrition Section in collaboration with the Nutrition Emergency Specialist and Nutrition Emergency Officer, will monitor the progress of the consultant work through brief progress updates, their reviews and feed-back to the consultant;
  • End of consultancy performance review will be conducted upon receipt of all deliverables
• Outputs/Deliverables:  
  • Inception report (within 2 weeks of contract start date)
  • Final IMAM Training Facilitator Module taking into consideration adult learning methodology and encompass adequate practice sessions.
  • Final IMAM Training Participant's Module taking into consideration adult learning methodology and encompass adequate practice sessions
  • Final IMAM Training Job Aids (including IMAM handbook, IMAM Wall charts, IMAM flip chart) reflecting the revisions of the IMAM guideline.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Nutrition and Public Health. A communication experience will be an added advantage.
• A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in adult learning methods and materials development. Knowledge and experience in managing IMAM programming within Kenya or developing countries and developing IMAM guideline and Job Aids will be an added advantage.
• Specialist skills/Training: Experience in adult learning methods and materials development. A communication experience will be an added advantage. Internet competency and strong computer proficiency, including mastery of the Microsoft Office software is required.
• The successful candidate must have a proven ability to work effectively in a team setting, and collaboratively across departments within an organization, different Government Ministries and NGO stakeholders.  Superior interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential
• Fluency in written and spoken English essential.
