    Intern - Environment Affairs

    This internship is located in the Gender and Safeguards Unit of the UNEP Policy and Programme Division at the Nairobi duty station. The Purpose is to provide an opportunity for students and graduates to obtain a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment of the United Nations, learn, develop new skills and gain experience.

    The internship is for a duration of six (6) months

    The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
    Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

    In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

    Responsibilities
    Under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer and the day-to-day supervision of the Gender & Safeguards Officer, the intern will be responsible for the following:

    1. Support gender mainstreaming by reviewing project proposals and related documents and providing feedback
    2. Carry out research and summarize key developments and emerging trends related to gender and the environment
    3. Participate in group discussions and contribute insights, ideas and feedback on key topics and issues
    4. Provide support to the Gender and Safeguards Unit and assist with planning and coordinating meetings and events
    5. Provide support to the International Gender Champions (IGC) Nairobi Hub Coordinator and assist with planning and coordinating meetings and events of the hub
    6. Performs other duties as required

    • Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience; Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

    1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
    3. Have graduated with a university degree.

    Be computer literate in standard software applications.

    Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

    Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience
    No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages
    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
