    Community-Based Journalists on Renewable Energy Reporting

    About Assignment

    To support its lobby and advocacy effort, Hivos East Africa’s Green and Inclusive Energy (GIE) Program has been working with media partners such as Nukta Africa to increase the overall quality and quantity of renewable energy reporting by journalists. We believe that if well trained and/or mentored, journalists can make an integral contribution towards the adoption of green and inclusive energy by creating awareness and interest at grass-roots, national and regional level. In Tanzania, the program is currently implementing a Renewable Energy Journalism Fellowship together with Nukta Africa and Journalists for Environment Tanzania (JET). In Kenya, GIE has previously organized two trainings for community based journalists in Nanyuki and Eldoret.

    Hivos East Africa seeks to recruit a qualified and experienced consultant for a 3-day training of community-based journalists in Kajiado County, Kenya. The workshops will be held from 15-17 April 2020 in Kajiado County.

    The Trainer Is Expected To Carry Out The Following

    • Develop a 3-day comprehensive curriculum incorporating renewable energy issues and communication skills. The participants should be linked to energy experts/mentors to support their stories development.
    • Organize and conduct above training between 15- 17 April 2020.
    • Prepare and submit reports documenting the output, including recommendations to Hivos East Africa on media engagement and progress in publication of stories by the participants within the first month after the training.

    • Reports of the training documenting the output, including recommendations on media engagement and progress in publication of stories by participants.

    Timeframe

    This assignment is expected to take a maximum of 7 days.

    Qualification And Experience

    The trainer should meet the following requirements:

    • Journalist/s with at least 5 years’ professional experience in covering the energy/environment sector in Kenya/East Africa.
    • Proven knowledge and experience in conducting trainings of similar nature.
    • Demonstrated experience in process facilitation.
    • Confident, persuasive, and able to communicate very well in English and Kiswahili.
    • Ability to manage various dynamics of diverse groups.
    • Be based in Kenya.
