    Legal Fellow (Nairobi)

    LAW seeks an enthusiastic Legal Fellow, preferably for a one-year, full time period to play a role in our Africa Programme to be based in Nairobi with travel within the region (once travel is possible).

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Programme Manager(s) Up to 12 months – subject to funding

    Location: Hours:

    Nairobi, Kenya, with regional travel Full-time / 40 Hours per week**

    Functions/Key Results Expected: The Legal Fellow will perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with the objectives and activities set out below:

    Programme-related tasks

    • In-depth research and analysis of the contexts of Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda and other African countries as needed.
    • In-depth research and analysis of international law – in particular, international human rights law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law.
    • Preparation of research briefs, legal documentation and factsheets on thematic topics including sexual and gender-based violence, conflict-related sexual violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
    • Monitoring and analyse developments of new legal trends and keep abreast with legal, political and governance related developments in areas that touch on LAW’s mandate and draft updates for LAW’s global team.
    • Prepare social media and advocacy messaging for LAW’s Africa team and updating LAW’s website relating to Africa.
    • Contribute to preparing training materials, organising and delivering training on human rights law, criminal law or other similar topic to justice actors in conflict-settings.
    • Contribute to drafting project proposals, collating project data, and drafting donor reports. Identification of new funding and partnership opportunities.
    • Any other duties as directed by the Programme Manager(s), or the Head of Africa Office.

    Skills and Qualifications Required:

    • Degree in law, preferably with a focus on human rights, international criminal law, conflict, access to justice; Master’s degree is an asset.
    • Knowledge and experience of delivering legal assistance in fragile or conflict-affected settings.
    • Excellent research and drafting skills.
    • Experience practising law is preferred.
    • Excellent organisational skills and analytical skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work on own and take initiative; demonstrated experience working remotely.
    • Experience working with international NGOs is strongly preferred.**
    • Candidates from the region preferred.

    LAW can provide a modest stipend for the fellowship and encourages potential fellows to secure funding from other sources (e.g. a law school, outside fellowship etc.) that should include health care coverage and any other costs. Please note that LAW will also not be able to provide housing although we may be able to make suggestions for accommodation options.
