Education (Minimum level of education)

• Diploma in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Technology

Knowledge

• Considerable knowledge of the basic principles and laboratory applications of biology, microbiology and chemistry
• Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Act 10 of 1999
• Knowledge of current laboratory facilities, methods, equipment, materials
• Knowledge of use of computers for laboratories
• Knowledge of public health laboratory laws and regulations; sanitary bacteriology regulations

Skills

• Ability to perform standardized biological, chemical, and microbiological examinations independently

• The hospital pharmacy and its outlets can at times be extremely busy and hectic. Needs to be highly organized not only to meet the demands of the role but also to avoid mistakes being made along the way.

Interpersonal skills

• Most patients find Doctors intimidating, and may not ask the questions they need about their medication. As a result, it's vital that the pharmacist is approachable to all and indeed recognizes when a patient may require extra help and advice to understand their treatment.

Adaptability

• Medicines are changing and developing all the time. Need to constantly keep updated on changes in the licenses (uses) or medicines as well as learning about newly launched medicines.
