    Research Associate -Capacity Building

    Responsibilities

      • Provide high-level, comprehensive technical support and bench supervision to scientists and research fellows conducting a wide range of crop and livestock-related research projects
      • Provide high-level support in tissue culture and transformation research projects
      • Ensure maintenance of bacterial cultures
      • Conduct genetic analysis of engineered bacteria and transgenic plants
      • Provide high-level support in genotyping data analysis for placements
      • Provide high-level support in genomics related research activities
      • Track pre-placement processes: follow up on work plans, budgets, risk assessments and import/export permits
      • Conduct research under the supervision of the research scientists
      • Ensure adherence to good laboratory practice including proper maintenance of equipment and managing the training laboratory
      • Co-facilitate weekly laboratory management meetings and monthly journal club for research fellows at the Hub
      • Prepare and edit SOPs for the Hub laboratory manual
      • Support research fellows and scientists in stock management and requisition of reagents, supplies and equipment
      • Participate and facilitate in the preparation and delivery of regular capacity building training modules, annual and specialized technical training workshops, and any additional training
      • Participate in Institutional trainings and seminars (Health & Safety, Firefighting etc.)
      • Coordinate with laboratory management to ensure that the laboratory equipment is in good working order

    Requirements

    • MSc degree in biological sciences with 2 years relevant work experience after graduation, or Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences with five years’ relevant work experience after graduation
    • Good theoretical and practical understanding of tissue culture and plant transformation is an added advantage
    • Demonstrated experience in a research environment, specifically in molecular sciences of crops, including PCR, sequencing, genomics, genotyping using SSRs and/or AFLP and other tools
    • Good working knowledge of bioinformatics is an advantage
    • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures
    • Computer literacy in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential
    • Mature, self-motivated person ready to concentrate on the job
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within team and multi-cultural setting
    • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken
