    Project Counselor

    Project Description

    The Women’s Health Project, based in Mombasa, was established in 1993. This project is a collaborative effort of the University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of Washington (UW), the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Mombasa County, the Ministry of Health, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), and the US President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

    The objectives of the organization are:

    • To conduct innovative HIV and STI prevention and treatment research that will contribute substantially to local as well as global knowledge and implementation of effective interventions.
    • To support HIV and STI prevention, care, and research efforts in Mombasa by training Kenyan researchers and practitioners, implementing technology transfer, and contributing to infrastructure development.

    Job Summary

    The Project Counselor will work under the supervision of the Clinic Section Head and in collaboration with the other project staff to ensure smooth running of the research site.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Work closely with the Clinic and Community Section Heads on the following tasks:
    • Obtaining informed consent from study participants for participation in research
    • Formulating psychological plan for participants issues
    • Offering pre and post HIV test counseling
    • Psychological and supportive counseling with referral to other social support systems
    • Antiretroviral therapy initiation and adherence counseling
    • Counseling for prophylactic drugs such as Septrin and Isoniazid
    • Participate in other study activities including fieldwork
    • Conducting face-to-face interviews with research participants
    • Provide health education and counseling to study participants on identified health problems and socio-economic issues related to their health
    • Organize support group meetings for participants on antiretroviral therapy
    • Perform any additional tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator or supervising staff

    Qualifications/Skills/Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Counseling Psychology or a related qualification
    • Required credentials, licensure or certification
    • At least 1 year work experience post-graduation
    • Computer literacy skills with MS Office software
    • Good communication and inter-personal skills
    • Fluency in Swahili

    Desirable Skills

    • Experience in counseling of clients in a medical setting
    • Experience in counseling of HIV clients
    • Experience working in a research setting with key populations
    • HIV Testing and Counseling certificate
    • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subjects Training certificate
