    Medical Director

    Emergency Plus Medical Services (E-Plus) is a private company, limited by guarantee, fully owned by the Kenya Red Cross Society to offer emergency medical services which include 24hr ambulance services, Pre-hospital care training and the sale of first aid kits.

    E-Plus is looking for a qualified person to fill the following position:

    Reporting to: Managing Director, E-Plus

    Job purpose

    Responsible to the Managing Director, the Medical Director will provide leadership to the Operations department by ensuring that appropriate structures, systems, competencies and values are developed and adopted to assure quality provision of pre-hospital care. In addition, s/he will provide leadership and medical expertise in the development of clinical programmes in line with the organisation strategy.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Ensure a comprehensive, coordinated program that delivers prompt response, appropriate care, and safe transport in medical emergencies.
    • To provide medical expertise in the review of adverse experiences.
    • To actively direct and oversee continuous quality improvement programs based on evidence-supported practices and outcomes, so as to critically appraise and advance the quality of clinical performance in the EMS system.
    • To participate and advocate in development of engaging, evidence-supported education for EMS operations staff and provide leadership and guidance in the development of certification and scope of practice policies necessary to function appropriately.
    • To actively promote research initiatives involving EMS systems, recognizing that pre-hospital research is an essential element in advancing evidence-based medicine within the practice of EMS medicine.
    • Responsible for advocating for the mental and physical welfare of patients and EMS staff, including supporting patient safety initiatives and EMS systems designs that incorporate appropriate actions.
    • Ensure effective team communication throughout the organisation through the application of suitable reporting systems and structures and the identification and provision of appropriate training.
    • Set and ensure compliance with patient care standards including communications standards and dispatch and medical protocols.
      Provide clinical consultations & direction to Paramedics and Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in person, via radio or telephone communication whenever called upon and continuously monitor all advanced life support (ALS) communications.
      Provide leadership, and oversight that is essential in ensuring that the medical care provided is safe, effective, and in accordance with accepted standards.
      Continuously lead the process of developing/reviewing standards, protocols, policies, and procedures as well as developing training programs; providing evaluations; and implementing a process for continuous quality improvement.
      Assure continuous quality improvement with a view to influence patient outcomes positively by delivering timely, consistent, appropriate, compassionate, and cost-effective services.
      Ensure that field staff provide the highest quality of care and that the EMS system supports them effectively.
      Develop and ensure that EMS has Standardized protocols, policies, performance, and documentation are invaluable in constructing a successful CQI process.
      Conduct Periodic disaster drills to assess performance, and educate EMS staff on the key lessons learnt.
      Develop Public education programs which are essential to inform the community we serve on ways to access the emergency medical services properly and provide information on prevention of emergencies.
      Ensure the qualifications of Emergency services staff involved in patient care and dispatch are maintained on an ongoing basis through education, testing, and credentialing as the authorities have determined.
      Develop and implement an effective process improvement program to ensure continuous patient care improvement.
      Maintain liaison and promote partnerships with the medical community including, but not limited to, health facilities, emergency departments, physicians, out-of-hospital providers, and health workers.
      Develop and continuously review the list of emergency equipment and medicines used in Pre- hospital care as per the scope of service.
      Be the in charge on training programs for different EMT levels by making sure that Medical education for the staff is ongoing (CME)

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science in Medicine, MBchB
    • Masters in Emergency Medicine or in ICU/Anesthesiology will be an added advantage
    • License to practice Medicine

    Key Competencies

    • At least 6 years working experience as a doctor in a busy hospital with at least 2 years in a busy ER or ICU
    • Experience of working in a Mobile Intensive Care Unit
    • Experience in lecturing in emergency Pre- Hospital care/Anesthesia/ICU
    • Experience in Emergency medicine research
    • Familiarity with the design and operation of Pre - hospital EMS systems.
    • Knowledge of EMS laws and regulations.
    • Knowledge of Emergency Medical Services dispatch and communications systems.
