    Consultant - Epidemiology and Surveillance-Intel Info Products. ARC

    Purpose of consultancy

    To collect, analyze and disseminate information on epidemiological trends and evidence. He/she will conduct the surveillance process of, monitoring of public health interventions, coordinate and provide data management and analytic support for acute responses.  

    Deliverables

    • Deliverable 1: Public Health Intelligence.  
      • Conduct public health intelligence activities on COVID-19 received from multiple sources, conduct retrospective analysis of reported incidents, determine trends and distribution patterns.
      • Strengthen global and regional monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 variants through enhancing detection and characterization of VOIs and VOCs.
      • Strengthen and further develop SARS-CoV-2 variant public health risk assessment through revision of relevant epidemiological and genetic indicators for longer-term surveillance, integration of alternative approaches.
    • Deliverable 2: Data management and analytics.  
      • Collect, review, verify and manage COVID-19 outbreak data and information, including data on SARS-CoV-2 variants, to be published in external and internal products in a timely manner.
      • Prepare and provide daily briefings to the Incident Management Support Team on the current epidemiological and variant situation globally of the COVID-19 outbreak.
      • Review and respond to enquiries from WHO colleagues across all levels of the organization as well as external partners on the accuracy and validity of daily COVID-19 case and death data, and on enquiries related to variants.
    • Deliverable 3: Health information products.  
      • Prepare and disseminate technical documents, updates and assessments to key decision-makers in the organizational hierarchy, and others as required using standard tools and templates.
      • Produce analysis for information products and develop material for a peer review publication.
      • Research and identify sources of information related to the COVID-19 for the drafting of technical materials, situation reports, briefing notes, articles and other materials.

    Qualifications, experience, skills and languages

    Educational Qualifications:

    Essential:

    • Advanced university degree in epidemiology, demography, statistics, health sciences, medicine/veterinary sciences or a related discipline that includes quantitative methods.

    Desirable: 

    • Advanced degree in health-related field or quantitative epidemiology.

    Experience

    Essential:

    • Seven to ten years relevant experience at national and international levels in implementation of public health surveillance, outbreak investigation and response, quantitative methods and epidemiology.

    Skills/Knowledge:

    Essential:

    • Skills in database management and statistical analysis, secondary data review, epidemiological analysis and public health information management. 
    • Skills in epidemiological analysis and public health information management, database management and statistical analysis, secondary data review. 
    • Good computer skills in Microsoft office, and statistical packages, such as R, STATA, and SPSS.
    • Demonstrated excellent English writing and ability to produce engaging and scientifically accurate communication materials. 
    • Ability to synthesize information in a clear and concise manner.
    • Ability to understand technical issues in the field of public health as well as knowledge of epidemiology, quantitative methods, and surveillance in emerging/re-emerging diseases. 
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and cross-cutting environment. 
    • Excellent organizational skills combined with the ability to multi-task and produce accurate results under pressure.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, diplomacy, tact and discretion, sound judgment and initiative.
    • Ability to work under pressure and to clearly articulate and present concepts and procedures to a broad range of audiences. 
    • Knowledge of public health sector and issues.

    Consultants – Neonatologist (Clinical and Research)

    Purpose of consultancy

    To discuss neonatology related aspects of provision of care within the research project, analysis and manuscript development on small and sick newborn care (SSNC)

    Deliverables: 

    Deliverable 1:

    • Discuss the neonatology related aspects of provision of small and/or sick newborn care. 
    • Follow up on the implementation of neonatal protocols within the research project and trouble shoot and advise site teams on issues related to neonatal units. 

    Expected by month 6: a write up of the neonatology support provided to the project.

    Deliverable 2: 

    • Draft with the WHO team and the site investigators, scientific manuscripts on the above related neonatology research projects.

    Expected by month 11.

    Qualifications, experience, skills and languages.

    Educational Qualifications:

    Essential:

    • University degree in Medicine with a specialization in pediatrics/neonatology.

    Desirable:

    • Formal qualification in neonatology.

    Experience

    Essential:

    • 5 years clinical experience in a level 2/3 SNCU/NICU in a low-income country setting. 
    • Research experience in low- and middle-income countries within the NICU/ SNCU.

    Desirable: 

    • Experience in research focus (implementation research) with focus on the care of small or sick newborns in SNCU in LMIC.

    Skills/Knowledge

    Essential:

    • Knowledge of quantitative research methods as evidenced by peer reviewed publications related newborn health.
    • Basic/ intermediate knowledge of stata or equivalent statistical package.

    Consultant – Strategic Communication

    Purpose of consultancy

    To write, review, provide input to and/or edit specific priority communications materials and reports in support of UNITAID’s strategic communications activities. 

    Deliverables

    • Write-up of Unitaid 2022 Annual Report. 
      Expected by: Q2 2023.

    • Edit key organizational reports, including but not limited to the Annual Report and the Report of the Executive Director to the Executive Board.
      Expected by: Q2 and Q4 2023.
    • Draft articles, op-eds, statements and speeches.
    • Develop content for crisis communications.
    • Write and revise internal and external communications materials, including content for slides.

    Qualifications, experience, skills and languages.

    Educational Qualifications:

    Essential:

    • Advanced degree in the field of journalism, communications, social science, public health, development or similar field.

    Experience

    Essential:

    • Over 10 years of experience in drafting strategic communication documents targeting key external stakeholders, including governance bodies, donors, decision makers, political leaders, diverse partners. 
    • At least 5 years of experience in drafting corporate reports, advocacy documents, and similar communications products.
    • At least 5 years of experience in drafting articles, op-eds, online content and/or content for social media.
    • Demonstrated track record in developing strategic communications for senior leaders, crisis communications.
    • Experience distiling complex technical topics into relatable content for broad audiences, particularly in the area of public health.   
    • Experience analyzing and interpreting data and articulating related key findings in accessible communications products. 

    Skills/knowledge

    Essential:

    • Excellent written communication skills in English, with the ability to distil technical subjects in clear and accessible language for diverse target audiences.
    • Strong  understanding  of  global  health,  in  particular  in  the  areas  of  HIV,  tuberculosis, malaria,  reproductive, maternal,  newborn  and child health  and  global  health  pandemic response.
    • Excellent organizational skills and project management experience.
    • Demonstrated understanding of Unitaid’s strategy and business model.
