Job Description
Scope of work:
Working under the guidance of Sub County Nutrition Coordinator and facility in charge, the Nutrition Technologist will support the implementation of facility and community-based nutrition services, including screening, therapeutic feeding, and counseling. The position ensures adherence to Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) protocols and supports health system strengthening in nutrition service delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement outpatient therapeutic care (OTP) for children with severe acute malnutrition and supplementary feeding for moderately malnourished children and PLWs.
- Deliver nutrition services in clinics, including assessment, classification, treatment, follow-up, and counseling in accordance with national IMAM protocols.
- Lead the rollout of MIYCN, Baby-Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI), and Family MUAC approaches at facility and community levels.
- Coordinate with caregiver teams and CHPs to support household-level MUAC screening, health promotion, and early detection of malnutrition.
- Provide individual nutrition counseling and support, including for clients with medical complications such as those in Comprehensive Care Clinics (CCC).
- Collaborate with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to plan and conduct training for Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (M2MSGs) on MIYCN.
- Support mentorship and on-job training for nutrition volunteers, and CHPs by identifying capacity gaps and addressing them.
- Ensure consistent availability of nutrition supplies (e.g., RUTF, F-75, F-100) and functional equipment at the health facility.
- Conduct regular community mass screenings in collaboration with CHPs and link malnourished individuals to care.
- Participate in MNCH, One Health, and other integrated outreach programs to improve service coverage.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure timely submission of weekly, biweekly, and monthly reports using MOH tools (e.g., MOH 733B, 734).
- Promote integration of WASH practices in nutrition service delivery.
- Liaise with CHPs and community leaders to strengthen referral pathways and ensure client follow-up and recovery.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
- A minimum of Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized institution.
- Registered and licensed by the Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI).
EXPERIENCE:
- At least 2 years of clinical/community nutrition experience, preferably in a health facility setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Experience in IMAM, IYCF, outreach services, and use of MOH nutrition tools is an added advantage.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with communities, and a team-oriented mindset.

SCOPE OF WORK
The Nutrition Officer will be responsible for implementing nutrition interventions in the AMREF Project Daraja.The Nutrition Officer will be responsible for day-to-day implementation of the humanitarian nutrition and interventions within the programme. He/She will play a critical role in the scale up of IMAM services as well promotion of optimum maternal, infant and young child practices at community level. The position holder will work closely with the county, sub county health department and the other nutrition partners in the County to strengthen health system support for improved quality of care.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Strengthen coordination with county and sub-county health management teams (CHMT/ SCHMT) and other partners to align nutrition interventions with government priorities.
- Provide technical assistance to health facilities on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM), Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN), micronutrient supplementation, and targeted supplementary feeding.
- Coordinate training and capacity-building for healthcare providers, Community Health Promoters (CHPs), and volunteers based on identified system-strengthening needs.
- Support forecasting, distribution, and consumption tracking for essential nutrition commodities.
- Conduct joint supportive supervision, mentorship, and data quality assessments in collaboration with MoH teams.
- Facilitate community engagement on improved dietary practices, food preservation, and locally available nutritious foods.
- Support MoH to scale up micronutrient supplementation (VAS, IFAS, Deworming, and Zinc) in hard-to-reach areas via ECDs and CHPs.
- Collaborate with education stakeholders for school-based nutrition and health screenings.
- Lead compilation and submission of quality programmatic reports and participate in data review and decision-making forums at various levels.
- Support and participate in milestone meetings including mid-term reviews, strategy sessions, and annual performance reviews with MoH and partners.
- Facilitate the exchange of knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices with county teams, partners, and internally within the organization.
Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, or related field. A Master’s degree is an added advantage.

Experience

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Leadership and Capacity Development
- Build/Strengthen the capacity of S/CHMT to provide technical guidance, advice and support for implementation and monitoring of activities across a broad range of RMNCAH service delivery areas, including:
- Community-based pregnancy mapping and referral
- Facility-based pregnancy intention screening
- Prenatal care and early identification of risk factors affecting future pregnancies among women of reproductive age.

- Build capacity of SCHMTs to promote the development of health workers and management staff capacity in the above areas through a broad range of approaches such as training, one-on-one mentorship and on-the-job training, supportive supervision, on-site and off-site training coordination etc.
- To provide technical leadership in the implementation of an Integrated Maternal, New-born, Child Adolescences Health /Nutrition /WASH services at the sub county, facility level and community level.
- Effectively plan, execution and evaluate the implementation of activities and critically reflect and improve on project strategies to promote quality in delivery of RMNCAH service delivery at the facility and community level.
- Provide leadership in development of sub county project quarterly reports and presentations for sharing with donor and other stakeholders
Partnership and Team Work
- Work closely with SCHMT and other project staff to ensure that project strategies and approaches are delivered in a coherent and coordinated way, in line with log frame targets, and build partnerships with other key organisations to promote synergy and workable partnerships,
- Nurture good relationship with the county, implementing partners, Faith Based Organizations and Community Based Organizations/Civil Society Organizations
- Coordinate and the program in county and sub county meeting and activities
Performance Monitoring
- Oversees work planning, performance management, monitoring & evaluation processes, documentation, reporting, data quality and strategic communications at Sub county level
- Routinely use data to inform and improve decision making on RMNCAH interventions and project adjustments, particularly for improving quality of care.
- Support strengthening of social accountability at health facility level through establishment and strengthening of Technical Working Groups, Stakeholders forums, learning sessions, MPDSR committees, Respectful Maternity Services, client satisfaction surveys, Quality Improvement teams, suggestion box and Service charter utilization
Program development
- Participate in concepts development and writing of new concepts and proposals for fundraising.
Qualifications
EDUCATION & KNOWLEDGE
- At minimum a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and related RMNCAH clinical experience. Masters level on related field will be an added advantage.
EXPERIENCE
- Should have at least three (3) year work experience in RMNCAH Program of similar scope.
- Experience working with government or donor funded programs will be an advantage.
- Experience working with adolescent’s reproductive health
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with government representatives, for-profit private sector entities, local community organizations, donors and other stakeholders, particularly at the sub national level, preferably including demonstrated experience in building service delivery quality and utilization.
