    Immunization Project Assistant

    Through its Immunization Center, JSI seeks to strengthen global, regional and country efforts to improve routine immunization (RI) systems and increase coverage at scale in a sustainable and equitable way with attention to quality. JSI is a global leader known for its focus on strengthening routine immunization as an integral part of the broader health system. JSI works at scale with Ministries of Health and partners to support the multiple interrelated components of the RI system, and to identify, design and spread promising new program approaches to sustainably overcome long-standing challenges. JSI is recognized for its global and customized country work to build capacity, reduce inequity, improve the availability, quality and use of data at all levels, partner with communities and civil society, introduce new life-saving vaccines, change behavior, strengthen communications, and professionalize supply chain management.

    The Center influences the global technical agenda for RI system strengthening through advocacy with partners and participation in international forums to share JSI’s technical expertise and development perspective, pursuing the inclusion of RI strengthening in all immunization-related efforts. In addition to this global technical leadership role, the Center serves as the hub for all immunization technical activity within JSI, and manages a portfolio of immunization-related projects and new business opportunities, in collaboration with other JSI Centers and the organization’s bilateral and centrally-funded projects.

    Pending grant award, JSI will be providing technical assistance to the Kenyan Ministry of Health and the National Vaccines and Immunization Programme (NVIP) during the introduction of the HPV vaccine in 2019. JSI will be providing support in the following areas:

    • Development of training materials and technical guidelines
    • Capacity building
    • Microplanning
    • Service delivery strategies
    • Assessment of cold chain readiness
    • Distribution of vaccines and other commodities
    • Post-Introduction Support
    • Documentation of the HPV introduction experience and lessons learnt

    The Project Assistant will be based in Nairobi and work with MOH/NVIP and other partners in providing technical assistance at both national and district levels in preparation for HPV rollout campaign and introduction into routine immunization nationwide. The PA will work under the direction of and be supervised by the Immunization Technical Officer (ITO) and will also work closely with the Immunization Logistics Technical Officer. The JSI team will provide expertise toward the design, coordination, implementation, evaluation, and documentation of HPV rollout. This may include providing technical input to improve the planning, management, coordination, training, monitoring, and/or evaluation of the HPV introduction.

    The PA will also manage administration and logistics including assistance with implementation, monitoring and documenting the processes and programmatic activities at field level. The PA will need to maintain close collaborative relationship with MOH partners and JSI colleagues in Kenya and at HQ.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following assigned duties:
    • Support national planning of HPV rollout; development of micro plans and activity timelines;
    • Support coordination with relevant partners within and outside the health sector;
    • Support development of guidelines and social mobilization materials for HPV rollout;
    • Support capacity building of health workers at all levels, including technical assistance to developing training materials, facilitating training of trainers (TOTs) and monitoring rollout of trainings in the districts;
    • Provide logistical support for HPV vaccines and supplies;
    • Coordinate and conduct supportive supervision to the districts to support preparatory activities and during immunization;
    • Analyze HPV immunization data both at national and district levels to provide feedback to relevant authorities and provide technical support in the development of strategies to address the identified gaps;
    • Support documentation of HPV rollout;
    • Collaborate with the JSI headquarters team in the preparation and implementation of work plans and budgets for the grant, and submit technical reports to the project, client, and relevant partners, including monthly activity summaries and interim technical reports;
    • Responsible for the supporting the day to day activities in accordance with the project work plans and other project activities in order to ensure effective implementation
    • Participate in routine calls and meetings with the ITO and HQ team.
    • Travel to select sub-counties and health facilities on a regular basis
    • Perform other duties as assigned by JSI Immunization Center and Immunization Technical Officer.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy, Logistics Management, Business management or related field.
    • Minimum of 3 years program support experience in a busy office (public or private)
    • Experience working with MOH in Kenya required, ideally at county or sub-county level
    • Ability to communicate effectively, instilling trust and confidence
    • Excellent interpersonal and community skills
    • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle a variety of assignments sometimes under pressure of deadlines
    • Experience with collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation and visualization of data desirable
    • Cooperative, hardworking, flexible and dependable
    • Self-motivated, proactive, and have a positive attitude to work requiring minimum supervision
    • Computer literate in use of basic computer packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
    • Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili
