    Driver

    FUNCTION

    • The Driver is responsible for ensuring smooth operations and field logistics for project activities by providing reliable and courteous service to Project staff and stakeholders. The driver is to deliver people and equipment on instruction. The driver, in conjunction with administrative staff, will be responsible for ensuring that all required permits and insurance are kept current by alerting the appropriate employees in time for renewal. S/he is to adhere to Heifer's policies and procedures, including when using project vehicles. The Driver will report to the Office Manager, and work in liaison with the Project Manager.
    • This position is contingent upon donor approval and funding.

    ESSENTIAL CHARACTER TRAITS

    • Heifer International Kenya is looking for a respectful, accountable, patient, teachable, flexible, helpful, courteous, and team-oriented individual.

    RESPONSIBILITIES & DELIVERABLES

    Establish, manage, and maintain allocated project vehicles (35%)

    • Daily, track and record vehicle mileage and fuel consumption.
    • Prepare and submit vehicle monitoring reports, including records of vehicle operations, fuel, and mileage at the end of each month.
    • Record official and personal trips as needed.
    • Comply with Heifer Policies and procedures regarding vehicle use.
    • Ensure that the motor vehicle has valid and up-to-date documents.

    Vehicle Security and Maintenance (30%)

    • Conduct an inspection of the vehicle before departing for duties.
    • Ensure the vehicle is kept clean and tidy.
    • Ensure the vehicle is closed and secured after working hours.
    • Ensure that all the necessary tools and documents are kept in vehicles. These include a valid driving license, First Aid kit, insurance, vehicle license, reserve tire, control technique papers, taxes, jack, jack handle, wheel spanner, and fire extinguishers.
    • Ensure vehicle insurance and registration is updated according to schedule.
    • Ensure the vehicle is serviced at the right mileage reading as provided in the manual.
    • Report any major repairs required on office vehicles.

    Be ultimately responsible for the safety of the vehicles and passengers (20%)

    • Observe the road and Country traffic laws, signs, and regulations.
    • Ensure punctuality and safe transportation of staff, visitors, and partners (as required), per the Standard Operating Procedures.

    Support Project Logistics (10%)

    • Support the logistics of events on-field by counter-verifying and moving/returning the required administrative materials.
    • Actively assist the smooth running of field meetings, seminars, conferences, and training, as required.
    • Pick and deliver office shipments, letters, and parcels.

     Any Other Assigned Function (5%)

    • May perform other job-related duties as assigned, including support in administrative duties as shall be directed by the supervisor.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Secondary School certificate or equivalent.
    • Ownership/possession of a valid driver’s license.
    • Excellent driving skills plus ten (10) years of relevant experience in a structured organization setting.
    • Experience in/ability to work with top Executives.
    • Vocational mechanic training.

    Preferred Requirements

    • Experience working in an NGO is an added advantage.
    • Post-secondary school certificate.

    Most Critical Proficiencies

    • Basic to intermediate knowledge of vehicle mechanics.
    • Strong communication skills in the English language.
    • Ability to read and write.
    • Good knowledge of road networks and routes.
    • Strong adherence to Heifer’s motor vehicle usage policy, as well as local and national traffic laws, always.
    • Knowledge of simple administrative work.

    Essential Job Functions and Physical Demands

    • Extremely clean, organized, and ready to maintain the assigned vehicle in excellent mechanical condition.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to individuals diplomatically and tactfully.
    • Must be courteous and of high integrity, especially in high-pressure situations.
    • Self-starter and self-motivator with the ability to work in a multicultural setting.
    • Must be a team player and can execute and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to follow directions and independently complete assigned tasks (written or verbal).
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, weekends, and some evenings.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 kilograms of items (floor to waist), as required.
    • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
