    Sign Language Interpreter

    An officer at this grade will provide interpreting and translating services in NCPWD in a variety of settings and coordinating interpreting services and activities. The person in this position will serve as a Kenyan Sign Language interpreter;

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Participate in planning and designing of the Sign Language interpretation services program.
    • Prepare and manage the annual interpreting budget, monitoring expenditure and costs against delivered and realized benefits as the program progresses.
    • Assist in coordinating the Kenyan Sign Language Communications Skills Training Program for NCPWD.
    • Assess Interpreter skills to ensure qualified interpreters are used in all NCPWD programs, thus enabling access to all NCPWD services to individuals who are Deaf, Deaf-blind or hard of hearing.
    • Coordinate scheduling and logistics of external interpreters needed by
    • NCPWD and other stakeholders.
    • Manage the National Sign Language Interpreters Database.
    • Coordinate day to day work schedules for SLI Assistant ‘I’ and ‘II’ and scheduling of external SLIs.
    • Assist in identifying training needs for Sign Language Interpreters.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to build the capacity of service providers on interpreting services guidelines and to develop and monitor implementation of Quality Standards Guidelines for Sign Language
    • Interpreting Services in NCPWD.
    • Assist in setting performance targets, monitor progress and appraise staff bi-annually
    • Coordinate the scheduling of interpreters to offer interpretation services in national and international celebrations.
    • Ensure the application of the international conferences interpreting guidelines are adhered to.
    • Collaborate with the management and other stakeholders to constitute technical working groups.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop a certification system and tools for Sign Language Interpreters.
    • Coordinate stakeholder participation in the validation of the sign language interpreter framework, final policies, guidelines and tools for NCPWD.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify research areas.
    • Coordinate and participate in undertaking the research on Sign Language interpreter services and deaf issues.
    • Spearhead the implementation of the research findings.
    • Prepare report on implementation status.
    • Any other duty as may be assigned

    Requirements for appointment

    • Bachelor’s Degree in the following disciplines; Communications, Sociology, Deaf studies, linguistics, or equivalent from a recognized institution;
    • Certificate in Computer Applications;
    • Must have served at least four (4) years relevant experience;
    • Certification from a recognized Sign Language interpreter certification body.
    • Fulfill the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution; if applicant is shortlisted

    Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable

    Remuneration – In line with the NCPWD salary scale & SRC guidelines on allowances
