    Senior House Officer AHUH(ON) Paediatrics & Child Health (Locum)

    Job Purpose

    The Senior House Officer, Pediatrics and Child Health department will provide quality primary pediatric care to all patients and continuously evaluate and improve the quality of primary pediatric care to meet patient treatment goals.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Participate in ward/casualty work – clerkship, patient education, writing of discharge summaries
    • Discussion of patients with instructors and consultants.
    • Participate in general and specialist clinics
    • Participate in quality improvement activities – medical audits, process indicators, management guidelines development and application
    • Participate in morbidity/mortality review preparation
    • Assist in the examination and observation of emergency cases by performing such duties as taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering diagnostic laboratory and radiology studies.
    • Attend to critical patients in a timely manner.
    • When necessary, carry out privileged and potentially life-saving emergency surgical and medical procedures.
    • Educate patients on wellness, prevention and early detection.
    • Provide materials, resources and referrals to patients, family members/care givers.
    • Educate patients on informed consent, choice of attending physician and right to seek second opinion.
    • Initiate timely discussions with relevant consultants/departments to arrive at the best treatment plan for specialized cases.
    • Participate in establishing various planning parameters for addressing referral cases received at AKUH, N.
    • Engage nursing and ward staff in ensuring that the most appropriate care and treatment are given to patients.
    • Participate in discussions with relevant members of the clinical care team to enable better integration of patient care activities.
    • Work closely with members of the clinical care team to reduce errors and waste, improve skillfulness and resource utilization.
    • Participate in departmental committees and internal business meetings
    • Attending & present at CMEs
    • Develop and implement personal learning objectives
    • Participate in teaching of interns, elective students and nurses
    • Role model junior colleagues
    • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills with colleagues and clients
    • Readiness to take extra duties
    • Organize for locally available data on prevalence and incidence of common ailments in AKUHN
    • Help the conferences registrar/resident in organizing for research related activities
    • Initiate discussions with consultants and colleagues to enable integration of clinical research activities, shared knowledge, institutional quality improvement and patient wellness activities.
    • Participate in all team efforts as departmental needs arise.

    Qualifications, Experience and Skills required:

    • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
    • Registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board
    • A valid Basic Life Support, Pediatric advanced Life Support Course Certificate will have added advantage
    • Successful internship completion plus one year post internship experience
    • Good communication skills

    Clinical Nurse, Chemotherapy Unit

    Responsibilities:

    • Assess patients for chemotherapy to ensure their physical condition and blood parameters are satisfactory to safely receive treatment according to treatment protocols / regimes.
    • Administer intravenous and oral chemotherapy, and safely dispose of Chemo contaminated material in accordance with Hospital Safety Guidelines
    • Provide information regarding treatment and chemo side effects to ensure each patient is prepared for their specific treatment and elicit informed consent
    • Provide one to one and telephone advice to patients and their families regarding treatment side effects and management of side effects to ensure each patient receives care which is specific and appropriate to their needs
    • Assess patient’s readiness for radiotherapy, through history taking and physical examination.
    • Closely monitor patients undergoing Chemotherapy and other treatments, be able to identify reactions/complications, communicate the reactions/ complications to the physician and participate in management of the same
    • Recognize and provide psychological and emotional support to patients and their families, and be able to refer to counsellors when appropriate
    • Observe infection control guidelines while caring for central venous lines, and be able to advise patients about care of those lines in the home setting   
    • Be proficient in administration of other intravenous therapies i.e. Blood and blood products, bisphosphonates and IV fluids
    • Utilize evidence-based tools in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualized care to patients
    • Provide a high standard of holistic care encompassing physical, psychological, spiritual and social care to patients and families.
    • Ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines for staff and patients, reporting any accidents, incidents, hazards or equipment defects in accordance with laid down policies

    Requirements:

    • Registered Nurse from a recognized school of nursing or University
    • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care hospital

    Quality Advisor, Outreach Administration Office

    Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate development/review of quality and patient safety policies, procedures, and processes
    • Guide the interpretation and implementation of developed policies and procedures in the context of the quality and patient safety framework
    • Constantly be involved in the training and communication of quality and patient safety issues and standards/best practice throughout the assigned areas
    • Review accreditation and regulatory agencies survey /internal quality audit findings and support the development and implementation of corrective/preventive action plans to address non-compliance
    • Direct and support the collection, measurement and presentation of data required for monitoring and improving quality and patient safety
    • Lead Outreach Division in conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for sentinel and adverse events
    • Identify opportunities for Continuous Quality Improvement and support the implementation of CQI activities in Outreach Division
    • Support clinic leaders in identification of relevant utilization management indicators
    • Create department and physician-based data bases for identified utilization management indicators
    • Continuously audit compliance with the quality and safety program in assigned areas
    • Coordinate closure of matters arising from physician feedback for improved physician satisfaction and participation
    • Provide clinical support to corporate clients via care managers

    Requirements:

    • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a Medical/clinical field; a Master’s degree in Business or Health related field preferred.
    • Health Management background would be an added advantage
    • Three or more years’ experience in direct and indirect clinical care activities in a healthcare institution
    • In-depth understanding of good clinical practice requirements
    • Have strong experience and knowledge of clinical monitoring functions with knowledge of clinical research
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks
    • Excellent data analytical and presentation skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

    Locum Dental Surgeon, Outreach Clinics

    Responsibilities:

    • Carry out emergency dental procedures as well as attend to non-emergency procedures;
    • Counsel patients on oral hygiene instruction and demonstrate techniques to achieve this.
    • Examine, diagnose and treat general oral diseases
    • Educate patients on preventive dental care and oral health care
    • Records care provided in electronic health record system accurately and completely, reflecting the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided. Complete referrals, data collections instruments and other records or documents as required.
    • Dental Implant case diagnosis, treatment and long term follow up
    • Liaise with Consultants on adequate referral and follow up on specialized cases

    Requirements:

    • Bachelors of Dental Surgery
    • Registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board
    • Valid License
    • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • At least 2 years of relevant experience in general dentistry and dental implants
    • Clinical experience in Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine: patient education, diagnosis and treatment modalities
