    Senior Data Manager

    JOB PURPOSE: 

    The Clinical Information Network (CIN) is collaboration between KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) and partners. CIN if focused on improving collection and use of routine inpatient data to improve quality of care provided to admitted children and neonates and 24 hospitals are currently participating in the network.  The data manager is expected to lead and coordinate a team of data managers to develop databases using freely available non-proprietary software; develop scripts for data query resolution and data cleaning; and develop, maintain, and update scripts for reporting of data. Projects within CIN include surveillance and clinical trials.  The project requires a highly motivated, proactive individual who can explore and actualise solutions to emerging challenges. 

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    For the CIN and linked with the KEMRI/WTRP ICT Department (Based in Kilifi) to:

    • Coordinate roles and monitor progress of Data Management Team and Analytics team – build capacity of team through on-job training as required – provide at least monthly updates to PIs
    • Provide oversight of HSU team ICT requirements for hardware and software ensuring equipment fit for purpose including server management (Linux and other as required)
    • Lead implementation of progamme wide data governance / data management strategies – training team members as required – and liaison with Kilifi ICT / Data Management units
    • Design and develop adaptations to / programming enhancements to REDCap and participate in the REDCap user group and other forums to understand the latest developments
    • Help develop strategies using R to improve data quality and perform data analysis routines that can be incorporated into routine reports, and clinical trial monitoring.
    • Develop and update web applications (supervising work of others as appropriate) maintained by HSU
    • Take the lead in and provide oversight of HSU project and data archive development and access – to include use of DataVerse, Github and other platforms as required and to enable team to deliver ‘Open Access’ to data and tools
    • Provide support in training of field data collection teams including developing training materials, preparation of hardware / software, training schedules and conducting training.
    • Liaison with companies / groups who are developing electronic medical records to foster harmonization of key data across EMR platforms
    • Maintain study databases as required including ensuring regular updates, cleaning, backups and archiving and ensure all related records and reports are handled and managed in line with data governance protocols.
    • Ensure compliance with programme ICT policies that span data storage, description, security etc across the research team
    • And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master’s Degree in Mathematics/Statistics or Computer Science
    • At least 5 years’ experience with 3 years’ experience as a data Manager or Supervisory level in a research or health institution.
    • Experience in data analysis and programming using R and/or python
    • Experience managing RDMS such as MySQL including optimization and back-up.
    • Familiarity with Linux
    • Experience of developing system documentation

    DESIRABLE:

    • Experience with data management for large multi-centre clinical trials
    • Experience in managing multisite, distributed data collection and integration
    • Experience with report development for data quality assessment
    • Experience with use of R for statistical programming and R Studio
    • Experience using git for version control
    • Prior work related to health care and ideally experience of analysing health data and writing research reports
    • Familiarity with web development frameworks (React, Vue etc) and Docker would be an added advantage.
    • An interest in developing team management skills
    • Experience in eHealth and web development
    • Experience with report writing for data quality
    • Experience in server management

    COMPETENCIES

    • Experience in using LINUX, MySQL and version control
    • Experience in using data collection tools preferably REDCap, ODK, openClinica and openMRS
    • Experience in managing multisite, distributed data collection and integration
    • Excellent skills in data analysis preferably R, STATA, Python.
    • Understanding of database design and maintenance, quality control and data cleaning
    • Well-developed troubleshooting capacity and clarity of thought
    • Excellent customer support and communication skills
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment and to multi-task
    • Ability to interact with users/ office colleagues in simple non-technical language
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written)

    Data Manager

    JOB PURPOSE: 

    This role is responsible coordinating surveillance and ensuring all surveillance activities are conducted according to plan and surveillance data are of high quality. 

    JOB DIMENSIONS:

    • Identify, raise, and troubleshoot data queries with hospital-based data clerks at project sites to ensure accurate and timely data collection
    • Maintain the project web portal supporting interactive interfaces that, among other functions, support data queries, monitor data quality and trends, and administer online training for study team members
    • Design and develop adaptations to / programming enhancements to REDCap and participate in the REDCap user group and other forums to understand the latest developments
    • Participate in the collection, processing, and compilation of study data.
    • Provide support in training of data collection teams including developing training materials, preparation of hardware/software, training schedules and conducting training.
    • Maintain study databases as required including ensuring regular updates, cleaning, backups and archiving and ensure all related records and reports are handled and managed in line with data governance protocols.
    • Ensure compliance with programme ICT policies that span data storage, description, security etc across the research team
    • And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics/computer science/ ICT with demonstrated skills in work areas developing scripts for report generation.
    • At least 3 year of work experience in data management or similar roles.
    • Sound understanding of, and experience with Linux, and open-source programming languages - R or Python
    • Practical experience with Electronic Data Capture tools such as REDCap, ODK, or KoBo Toolbox.
    • Experience with Linux server environments
    • Expert knowledge of maintaining and debugging live software system and of writing and editing program documentation.
    • Familiarity with MySQL and another RDBMS

    DESIRABLE:

    • Experience with report writing for data quality
    • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training and certification
    • Prior work with Electronic Health Records
    • Familiarity with development frameworks, docker and git

    COMPETENCIES

    • Understanding of database design and maintenance, quality control and data cleaning
    • Appreciation of the use of data for routine reporting
    • Well-developed troubleshooting capacity and clarity of thought
    • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and work within tight deadlines
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and to multi-task
    • Ability to communicate technical concepts, processes, and data to non-technical audiences
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written)

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:

    • Based at the Nairobi office of the KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Research Programme, Kenya.
    • Regular travel, including outside of Nairobi to visit project sites for training, oversight, clinical reviews and troubleshooting.
