    Legal Manager - Sales, Operations, and International Expansion

    As Remote is increasing its global footprint, every expansion into a new country brings myriad legal issues. The Legal Team is responsible for the legal soundness of our business models, contractual agreements with clients and their staff (i.e. the employees we hire under our “Employer of Record” service – our “external employees”) and data protection compliance amongst other areas.

    More specifically, we support:

    • Our Sales team in their negotiations with clients (this includes optimising the contracting process – who doesn’t love a good playbook?);
    • Our Employee Lifecycle team in their support for external employees (if you want to know how to get a social security number for someone in Spain, this is the place to be!); and
    • Our International Expansion team, providing them with Legal support as we expand into new territories.
       

    Our Legal team enjoy exposure to a broad range of areas, but are also encouraged to focus on one or two things specifically. We want to empower team members to Own (one of our five core values ) their projects and tasks. They nevertheless have support, leadership and guidance from our General Counsel who has run Legal teams in 2 fast-paced scale ups.

    Our priorities for 2022 are likely to be centred around:

    • A better contracting process (for our Sales team and for when we onboard external employees).
    • A better internal knowledge base so that colleagues can quickly find the answers they need on a self-service basis.
    • Providing top quality Product counsel to teams that are improving our existing service and launching new services.

    Requirements

    • Qualified Lawyer (mandatory)
    • Figures out solutions rather than just escalating problems.
    • Low ego.
    • Previous in-house experience (preferably 3 years+)
    • Interested in working for a tech-scaleup and specifically HR-tech
    • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
    • Ability to switch between multiple different projects
    • Ability to learn and master Remote's communication application (Slack), contract management system (Juro), documentation sources (Notion, Google Drive, etc.), and task management system (Asana)
    • Eager to learn about different legal systems
    • Writes and speaks fluent English
    • It is not required to have experience working remotely, but considered a plus.

    Key responsibilities

    • Take on a leadership role within the Legal team, helping to support other team members using your subject matter experience and people management skills.
    • Build relationships with key senior stakeholders across the organisation, evolving the role of the Legal team in order to add maximum value to the business.
    • Advise Sales, Product, Onboarding, Payroll & Benefits Customer Success, Employee Lifecycle, International Expansion and People teams on a wide range of legal issues across multiple jurisdictions.
    • Create, negotiate and manage contracts at all levels (client facing documentation as well as employment contracts)
    • Manage external local counsel and contribute to internal knowledge bases so that our colleagues can increasingly self-serve.
    • Assist with other legal, advisory and compliance work as required.

    Legal Specialist - Internal Knowledge Management

    As a Legal Specialist - Internal Knowledge Management, your responsibility is to support the entire Legal Team by implementing and maintaining our internal knowledge base which will be made available to the entire company and eventually to our clients. Our immediate goal is to document and educate each and every member of our organization and empower our peers to use and reuse our legal advice in the appropriate context. We are also seeking assistance with our precedent creation, template creation, and overall documentation organization. Because Remote is growing rapidly, we need to develop a knowledge base for the legal department and this will provide you with the opportunity to use your organizational and drafting skills to kick start and maintain our knowledge base alongside the legal department in the method of your choosing. We want to empower you to Own (one of our five core values ) your projects and tasks as you become a key member of the Legal Team.

    Requirements

    • Legal background and training with 3+ years experience
    • Passion for legal drafting, writing, and analysis, with uncompromising attention to detail, utilizing brevity, plain English, succinctness, and clarity. More importantly, we are seeking someone with a strong desire to make legal advice and content easy to understand that is also readily accessible. We are a fast-paced tech company and we need to speak other people's languages, rather than expecting everyone to speak ours.
    • Commitment to knowledge-sharing, efficiency and excellence in legal work
    • Ability to build and maintain relationships with team members throughout the organization
    • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
    • Excellent organizational, planning and project management skills including record keeping, data collection, and system information. Ability to compile and analyze information and deliver the same in a format which is both detailed and informative
    • Highly motivated, strategic focus: ability to understand and support the Legal Team's goals, services, values and strategy in order to develop creative and innovative solutions to better support our internal stakeholders and safe-keeping in our internal knowledge base
    • Dependable team player with high energy, creativity and vision who works collaboratively and cooperatively with others in a team-oriented environment

    Key responsibilities

    • This role will have a significant writing component including the creation, development and maintenance of our internal knowledge base, that is model documents, forms, drafting guidance, resource material, frequently-asked questions, sales-playbooks, and similar specifications of the Legal Team.
    • Ensure the knowledge base content, precedents, and resource materials are, and remain, up-to-date and readily accessible on Notion; organize and curate practical guidance across subjects to promote and make accessible the highest value content, and facilitate knowledge reuse.
    • Serve as a source of the Legal Team's knowledge and expertise; regularly review internal policies and processes; respond timely to queries pertaining o the knowledge base.
    • Develop and maintain substantive content relevant to the the Legal Team and business development efforts.
    • Assist internal stakeholders in locating internal knowledge resources, policies, and technologies.
    • Capture feedback for continuous improvement of our knowledge base and processes.
    • Develop workflows leveraging knowledge, resources, and technologies to promote efficiency in common matter types.
    • Provide ongoing individual and group team member training on knowledge base tools, resources, and best practices.
    • Evaluate new and innovative knowledge management and research tools and resources based on Remote and Legal's needs; participate in technology pilots and assessments.

    This is an exciting time to join Remote and make a personal difference in the global HR-tech space as a Legal Associate (internally we call this a Legal Specialist) , joining our Legal Team.
