The Embassy of the United States of America to Kenya, located in Nairobi, is home to the diplomatic mission of the United States to the Republic of Kenya. The embassy opened in central Nairobi on 2 March 1964, when the United States established diplomatic relations with Kenya.
Duties
The incumbent reports to the Custodial Supervisor and works as a member of a Custodial Team to perform a wide range of janitorial tasks. Duties include maintaining sanitary health and strict safety standards, escorting contractors, and general labor duties. The individual is responsible for performance of scheduled and unscheduled cleaning and custodial tasks throughout offices, buildings, entrance/exit areas, garages, shops, and plaza areas of the Embassy compound and other US government properties. The incumbent may also move furniture or appliances, assist various offices’ in loading/unloading shipments, opening/moving crates and boxes, assist with setting up for conferences or ceremonies to include delivery and setting up chairs, tables, and equipment for conferences and ceremonies.

The incumbent works as a Maintenance Inspector for the Facility Management Section at the U.S Embassy, Nairobi. This position is responsible for inspecting approximately 350 residential housing units and all U.S. Government owned properties to determine the nature and extent of maintenance and repair work required to be performed but the U.S. Embassy and contractors. The incumbent must utilize knowledge of the engineering and construction environment to assess the building condition including structural, plumbing, and carpentry. When projects are required, the incumbent will be responsible for creating statements of work, concept drawings, cost estimates, and bills of quantity. The Maintenance Inspector will also work with Procurement in the contractor hiring process. While the project is underway, the incumbent will monitor contractor progress and compliance to U.S. Government and Kenyan regulations and safety standards. When the project is complete, the incumbent will inspect to ensure the work was done to specifications, construction standards and required building codes. The incumbent will be required to produce reports on facility condition of US Embassy Government Owned (GO) properties. Direct supervision will be provided by the Senior Facility Maintenance Supervisor FSN 11 (C52616).

Excellent working knowledge of all tools associated with all building trades. The incumbent must possess a thorough knowledge of building construction techniques and materials including plumbing and drainage, electrical systems, and low- and high-pressure heating system installations. Must possess knowledge of local building codes and ordinances and be familiar with local bidding practices. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of various building codes to include The International Building code, National Electrical Code, Uniform Plumbing code and ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers) Standards and all Local Kenyan Building codes.

As Head of Acquisitions, serves as the Program Director for all acquisitions and the Supervisory Librarian and expert in the major and primary functions of the LOC-Nairobi for the identification, selection and acquisition of published and/or available primary research in 30 countries and territories in Africa of interest to the U.S. national libraries and 30+ U.S. research universities and libraries. Serves as the area studies experts for the countries covered by LOC-Nairobi, assigning and monitoring bibliographic and area specialization to three subordinate Acquisition Librarians (Library Acquisitions Specialists). Implements Library of Congress approval plans for both General Collections and the Law Library. Responsible for accuracy and assignment of duties in creating Initial Bibliographic Control (IBC) records. Has line authority over the 11 FSN staff responsible for acquisition, initial cataloging, and shipping; also serves as supervisor for 25 contracted Bibliographic Representatives in countries covered by the office.
Establishes production goals and ensures accuracy of entries to bibliographic databases, such as initial bibliographic records. Participates in specialized training by Library of Congress in Washington D.C., and passes this training on to subordinate staff as appropriate.
As part of the management team of the office, incumbent participates with other section heads plus the Field Director in determining office-wide policies for the office.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Thorough knowledge and understanding of LOC selection and acquisitions policies. In-depth knowledge and critical overview of commercial and noncommercial publishing sector in the countries covered by LOC-Nairobi. In depth knowledge of principles of librarianship, particularly as they relate to acquisitions in the Africa. Familiarity with political, cultural, social and economic trends in the area; and knowledge of the needs of the Africana collections of the Library of Congress and AfriCAP Participants. Incumbent must have general knowledge of host country government procedures, as well as the region covered by LOC-Nairobi Office. Knowledge of Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) formats, Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloging rules, and basic knowledge of accounting practices and procedures as they apply to the acquisition of library materials.

Duties
The incumbent serves as the post’s nurse with responsibilities that include the medical care of Mission employees and eligible family members under MED approved clinical guidelines, as well as maintenance and inventory of all medical equipment and supplies, implementation of a robust vaccination program, administration of group and individual health education programs, and medical emergency contingency planning for the Mission. The incumbent will work in the Medical Unit under the direct supervision of the Medical Provider (MP) or Regional Medical provider (RMO).

The incumbent possesses critical-thinking skills and comprehends MED’s policies and procedures regarding medical evacuations, hospitalizations and insurance reimbursement methodology. Must maintain current knowledge of local and regional medical services that can provide care for all acuity levels, including betted specialists and hospitals. Is a resource for arranging the best method to transport critically ill patients and maintains a working relationship with transport facilities.
