    Head of Residential Life

    The position

    The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is an International Baccalaureate World School. It is the first in the network of Aga Khan Academies established by His Highness the Aga Khan. 

    The Academy features state-of-the-art facilities, a multicultural student body, and an experienced team of educators and staff. We provide students with education of the highest standard in order to prepare them for lives characterised by leadership and service. Admission to the Academy is means-blind and is based on merit. We consider all eligible students regardless of socio-economic status.

    The Head of Residential Life will ensure that the residences are run in a way that meets the needs of students and the mission and vision of the school. He/she will be responsible for the appointment of residential staff and leads the team of residential staff and be responsible for the welfare of residential students and staff.

    The Head of RL will be responsible for developing the Heads of Residential Blocks times and for implementing quality assurance process to ensure policies are applied consistently and there is effective pastoral care of students. in addition He/She will ensure there is  good communication between the Residential community, the rest of the school and parents/guardians.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITY:

    • Monitor and maintain the welfare, safety, discipline and pastoral well-being of all Residential students.
    • Organise and develop strategies of running the Residences, both day to day and long term strategy.
    • Plan and oversee the residential activities programme in line with the expectations of the AKA residential life experience. 
    • Be responsible for leading and line managing the Heads of Residential Blocks.
    • Ensure that policies and procedures are followed (safeguarding, health and safety etc) 
    • Deploy, train and develop all residential staff to make the most effective use of their skills including Academy Fellows and Block captains
    • Ensure the Residential facilities and environment is safe and well maintained.
    • Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents and guardians of residential students.
    • Arrange host families and oversee host family programme
    • Make arrangements for and oversee the additional programmes that utilize and impact on the residences: Student Exchange, Revision Programme, Globa Encounters, and other holiday related programmes.
    • Market the residences to prospective parents with Admissions
    • Establish, publicise and maintain a routine for the residential blocks
    • Maintain all relevant policies and literature as required.
    • Plan and run inductions for all new students, irrespective of when they may arrive throughout the course of the academic year.
    • Act as Head of safeguarding for residential students and refer issues to safeguarding committee.

    The requirements

    • Must have a first degree and a recognised teaching certificate, or a Bed/MEd.
    • At least 2 years teaching experience and 5+ years of leadership experience in a residential program at an international School.
    • Must be trained on child Protection and Safeguarding.
    • Should have excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to interact well and communicate effectively with students, parents and colleagues within a diverse and pluralistic society.
    • An up-to-date understanding of practice and evidence of personal professional development
    • Attention to detail, discretion and the highest standards of integrity.

    Academy Fellows

    The position

    The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is an International Baccalaureate World School. It is the first in the network of Aga Khan Academies established by His Highness the Aga Khan. 

    The Academy features state-of-the-art facilities, a multicultural student body, and an experienced team of educators and staff. We provide students with education of the highest standard in order to prepare them for lives characterised by leadership and service. Admission to the Academy is means-blind and is based on merit. We consider all eligible students regardless of socio-economic status.

    The Academy Fellow will live in an apartment and serve the student residential programme as a Residential Parent promoting community life  and are responsible for the follow aspects of student and academic life.

    • While the Academy Fellow does not teach, s/he will be scheduled to have some contact with classes, to engage fully with the learning and teaching of the Academy so that he/she can support students with additional tutoring after school hours and during residential study time.  This will be approximately 10 hours a week (supporting 2 or 3 classes in a subject of the fellow/intern’s choice. Maths and Science are the areas of most need along with English as an Additional Language for our students who join on the Talent Identification Programme from marginalised communities in Kenya.)
    • Developing and delivering the Service- Learning Programme which takes place every week with Years 6-10. This is a 10 hour a week commitment and requires planning the activities, working with community partners, delivering the programme to. Students and colleagues and supporting individual groups as they develop and implement their projects.
    • Academy Fellows play a major role as Residential Parents in guiding residential students in their personal and academic goals and as Mentors for a small group of students to support them academically and socially. As residential parents fellows are expected to develop close relationships with their dorm sons/daughters by checking in with them frequently as well as supervising in an official capacity twice a week and one weekend in three.
    • Academy Fellows are expected to actively contribute to the co-curricular programme in some way such as coaching athletic teams, providing music lessons or running clubs such as gardening, cooking, debating, MUN, TedX, guiding students interested in applying to top international universities with SAT preparation, reading essays personal statements etc
    • Academy fellows will be asked to chaperoning off-campus residential and day trips, including to places of worship

    The requirements

    • A Bachelors Degree with excellent academic achievement and a range of interests
    • A  record of significant involvement in residential, student leadership, music, athletic and / or community service during university.
    • Genuine interest in and commitment to the mission of the Aga Khan Academies: to influence young people to become future leaders in the developing world.
    •  Experience of working with young people or mentoring peers.
    • Proactive self-starter, comfortable working autonomously.
    • Openness to the new experiences, cultures and learning.
