    Research Assistants(4), Brain and Mind Institute

    Job Purpose/Summary 

    The Research Assistant at the BMI plays a vital role in supporting research endeavors under the guidance of Research Associates, Research Managers, and Principal Investigators. Their responsibility primarily revolves around assisting with participant recruitment, administering interviews and tests, and managing data collected during research activities. Additionally, they collaborate closely with the Research Associate/Manager to ensure the smooth execution of research projects, including coordinating with research partners and stakeholders, maintaining research instrumentation, and providing technical support as needed.

    Key Roles and Responsibilities 

    • Support participant recruitment efforts using diverse strategies, maintain precise records, and ensure research project sites are efficiently set up.
    • Conduct interviews and surveys in adherence to ethical guidelines, while systematically organizing and securing collected data.
    • Provide technical assistance, collaborate with research teams to facilitate project execution, and ensure proper maintenance of research equipment.
    • Uphold ethical standards, ensure participant confidentiality, and comply with institutional and regulatory research protocols.
    • Take on additional responsibilities as the study progresses, ensuring seamless adaptation during initiation, implementation, and close-out phases.

    Relevant Experience and Qualifications 

    • Bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as psychology, public health, sociology, or a related discipline.
    • Additional certifications or coursework in research methods, data analysis, or relevant areas are preferred but not mandatory.
    • Minimum of 1 year experience in research data collection, and report writing.
    • Experience working in academic or research settings preferred.
    • Familiarity with participant recruitment procedures, data collection techniques, and research ethics.

    Data Officer, Brain and Mind Institute

    Job Purpose/Summary 

    This role supports data management activities within BMI’s research projects. Its purpose is to ensure data quality, integrity, and accessibility, thereby facilitating high-impact research. The position directly contributes to BMI's mission of advancing health research by organizing and managing data to maximize its use and value in studies focused on mental and brain health.

    Key Roles and Responsibilities 

    • Assist with accurate and timely data collection from diverse sources, ensuring error-free entry into study databases.
    • Perform data cleaning, validation, organization, and secure management to maintain accessibility and compliance with study protocols.
    • Prepare datasets for analysis, support preliminary data tasks, maintain documentation of processes, and generate summary reports as required.
    • Collaborate with the research team, conduct quality control checks, and address data-related inquiries to ensure high data integrity and compliance.
    • Archive data in line with regulatory standards, ensure de-identification for future use, and adapt to evolving responsibilities during the study lifecycle.

    Relevant Experience and Qualifications 

    • Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, psychology, health sciences, or related field.
    • At least 1–2 years of experience in research with data management roles.
    • Proficiency in R for statistical analysis, visualization and data manipulation.

    Operating Theatre & Recovery Nurse

    Responsibilities:

    • Ensures complete pre-op assessment including the surgical checklist, nursing documentation and Physician's assessment
    • Receives the patient prior to surgery, gets report from the accompanying nurse and performs
    • pre-op checklist.
    • Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team
    • Familiar with procedures in operating room and PACU routines and area specific assignments.
    • Circulate and assist as needed for surgical procedures
    • Scrub for surgical procedures in the operating room independently.
    • Prepare operating room for patient/procedure
    • Ensure effective recovery of patients post any form of anesthesia.
    • Assists with intubation and extubation of patient in the recovery room (RR) and in the operating room (OR).
    • Communicates with anesthetists and primary teams regarding patient issues and shifting plans.
    • Facilitates safe transfer of patient to alternate level of care as appropriate.
    • Promptly reports both clinical and non-clinical unusual findings/incidences to the nurse manager or designee
    • Identify patient and family learning needs and initiate appropriate teaching.
    • Ensures safety checks are performed to ensure correct patient and correct procedure is performed
    • Perform pain assessment and initiate analgesia as required
    • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
    • Coordinates theater list with concerned OR coordinator.
    • Ensure all specimens are properly labeled and delivered to the lab in a timely manner
    • Provide safe environment for patients through adherence to infection control practices and other safety policies.
    • Be able to recognize a patient in a pre- arrest or arrest states, and initiate Basic Life Support
    • Dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste safely in accordance with Aga Khan University Hospital Guidelines on waste management
    • Administer medication safely, monitor patient responses to medication and promptly report adverse reactions.
    • Be accountable for judicious and efficient use of resources i.e. accurate and timely billing of equipment and consumables     .
    • Care for equipment through cleaning, storage, per shift check of the inventory and timely reporting_and follow up of nonfunctional equipment to the nurse m nager or designee
    • Assist in orientation of new nurses and mentoring of junior nursing staff and students
    • Occasionally shift leads under supervision of senior RN
    • Participates in unit based continuing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC), audits, spot checks and skill checks.
    • Can be assigned to assist in medical surgical unit

    Skills and qualifications

    • In-depth knowledge of surgical operation procedures
    • Highly skilled at assessing patients prior to surgery and providing them with perioperative care
    • Extensive knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques
    • Ability to collaborate with surgeons and other healthcare professionals
    • Solid understanding of patient health and safety standards
    • Excellent organizational skills

    Requirements:

    • RN from a recognized school of nursing or university
    • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Higher Diploma in Peri-operative Theatre Nursing is an added advantage
    • Demonstrate evidence based knowledge of current practices in theater nursing.

    Clinical Practice Educator, Pediatrics Critical Care Units

    Responsibilities:

    • Leads the team in development, implementation and monitoring of unit based clinical policies and procedures
    • Takes lead in identification, definition and monitoring of unit based clinical indicators for
    • Is responsible for continuing education/training for nurses in Pediatrics and Neonatal critical care units
    • Assists the nurse manager, Paediatric Intensivist and neonatologists to initiate innovative and evidence-based strategies to improve patient training for nurses in Pediatrics and Neonatal critical care units
    • Participates in evaluation of care and outcomes through Mortality and Morbidity discussions, clinical incidence trends and clinical indicators training for nurses in Pediatrics and Neonatal critical care units
    • Together with the Nurse Manager, conducts regular evaluation of nurses and designs individual development plans based on identified learning/training needs in Pediatrics and neonatal critical care units
    • Is a resource person for the care team for all clinical matters in Pediatrics and Neonatal critical care units
    • Reviews patient allocation to determine correct patient assignment according to the nurse’s competence in Pediatrics and Neonatal critical care units
    • Ensures adequate orientation and settling of new nurses to assigned unit
    • Designs methods to motivate nurses in assigned unit to pursue individual professional growth and development
    • Develops and maintains effective networks both internal and external to improve nursing practice
    • Ensures compliance to documentation policy through spot-checks on nursing forms such Initial assessment, Vital signs chart, Patient Education Record, and fluid chart, treatment sheet and progress notes chart
    • Participates in evaluation of nursing documents to ensure their appropriateness in capturing patient information in Pediatrics and Neonatal critical care units
    • Takes lead in unit based Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC) and ensures participation by   nurses.
    • Guides nursing staff in initiation of and participation in unit based as well as hospital wide nursing research projects.

    Requirements:

    • Registered nurse (KRN/M; KRCHN) with a BSc-Nursing degree
    • Current licensure with the Kenya Nursing Council
    • Pediatrics Critical Care training
    • Certification in BLS & EPLS
    • Proficient in Basic computer skills
    • Minimum of five (5) years clinical nursing experience in Pediatrics Critical Care Nursing in an acute care hospital.
    • Must possess teaching abilities, leadership qualities, professional judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and a sense of professional development.
    • Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge of current practices in Pediatrics critical care nursing
