    Project Associate

    Responsibilities for the Project Associate Job

    • Project Management of the SEAD program (approx 40% of the time)
    • Participate in wide dissemination and sharing of the project learnings
    • Collect data and facilitate tracking of key metrics and processes for documentation and reporting as the project wraps up in 2017
    • Bridge engagement between our overseas team and East African stakeholders
    • Support ecosystem building activities in East Africa
    • Spot opportunities in the ecosystem and conceptualize how we can curate required conversations and platforms
    • Engage the private sector, academic institutions and public sector players and increase our network of financial or non-financial partners, with the aim of driving future-looking conversations or joint projects with our innovators
    • Increase our visibility in East Africa, by harnessing and participating in speaking and co-hosting opportunities
    • Participate in Knowledge Creation and Dissemination
    • Identify needs for knowledge products in the ecosystem and for various stakeholders
    • Develop these products and concepts in collaboration with the team
    • Identify and write about, for instance, scalable aspects of innovators’ business models, create blog posts, tell innovator stories and help publish papers
    • Engage with universities to expose talent to the healthcare innovation space
    • Present or speak at events
    • Collaborate on Business Development
    • Identify, approach and have conversation with people who can help drive our mission forward or who can help our innovators scale
    • Support new business development opportunities for our organization, especially in partnership with funders. This includes drafting proposals and reports to assist potential funders in their understanding of our value proposition
    • Support our capacity-building activities for Healthcare Innovators and Entrepreneurs
    • Support student engagement on projects with innovators in East Africa, including students from Duke University and African universities
    • General team work
    • Pick up various aspects of event management
    • Support processes for the SEAD grant and other office processes
    • Provide ad-hoc project management support as required by the team

    Project Associate Job Qualifications

    • You have a deep passion for healthcare innovations. Previous experience working in the global health or health systems field is ideal, experience with healthcare entrepreneurs is highly preferred.
    • You are creative, you easily see the big picture, and you spot opportunities.
    • You have curated events and conversations in the past and created value for the stakeholders and the ecosystem at large. You don’t mind picking up administrative work on events either.
    • You enjoy networking and are well embedded in the public health space in East Africa.
    • You understand the business side of healthcare as well as the public sphere.
    • You have around five years of work experience, with at least three in project or program management. You have an excellent track record of managing large and loosely-scoped projects in East Africa, delivering strong results.
    • You have proven experience in developing a network of companies and institutions, identifying important partners, maintaining relationships with and delivering value to them.
    • You have experience in telling stories in strategic ways, enjoy producing knowledge and you are great at putting things on paper.
    • You have solid experience writing proposals and engaging in business development activities with multinational corporations, large donor agencies or foundations. You have a track record in cultivating new funder interest, and have helped to design potential projects.
    • You are a self-starter with high tolerance of ambiguity. People talk about your high level of initiative and resourcefulness in identifying and solving problems.
    • You are engaging and interactive: You enjoy meeting new people and naturally toss ideas around in the team.
    • You stay calm under pressure, drive results with little supervision and know how to stick to deadlines.
    • A master’s degree in a relevant field is highly preferred and you have gained strong analytical skills through your studies.

    More information

    • This position is a one-year appointment and will be renewed with the receipt of anticipated funding. There will be a 3-month probation period with learning and performance objectives. You will work from our Kilimani office in Nairobi and should be able to begin the on-boarding process in January 2017. Work includes international travel approximately 20% of the time
