    NSPP Technician

    About this job
    • The purpose of the NSPP technician is to support the NSPP specialists  in Kenya Pollen to deliver the targets set by the breeders for all crops (cereals, vegetables, corn and sunflower)
    • To develop experience and knowledge of the basic skills associated with plant nursery and seed production operations management, with specific focus on disease management, scouting, corrective actions and testing / on process improvement.
    • To support the NSPP specialists in the coordination of preparation, sowing, plant selection, pollination, harvesting and processing of seeds and in the execution and monitoring of the whole nursery and seed production activities. This will require precision, accuracy and efficiency in  operations, with the aim of achieving the teams set targets and goals in terms of quality, quantity and deadline
    • Support the coordination of all operations cross crop
    • oversite of growth of plant material and reacting to issues with plant growth e.g. pests and diseases, cold room conditions together with the NSPP specialists
       
      Accountabilities
       
    • Supporting the NSPP specialists by learning all tasks related to crop management, pollination and selection and seed processing.
    • ensure timely execution of all operations including sowing, plant morphology recording, field observations, plant selection and pollination, harvest and threshing, label production and data collection, shipment preparation together with logistic department
    • To be proficient in the use of all NSPP related software used in the planning and management of the nursery program.
    • To coordinate and execute the tissue sampling of various material in readiness for marker testing in our molecular marker lab in FR
    • Oversee coordination of permanent and casual labour working within NSPP team area (with no reporting line) and efficient labour and tasks allocation
    • To be an effectively communicator and liaise on a regular basis with NSPP specialists on the status of activities and reporting issues and improvements proposals.
    • Ensure all projects meets production quantity, quality and cycle length targets agreed with breeders and plan established by NSPP specialists
    • Performing all tasks and behaving in a manner compliant with and in support of all health and safety related company policies and practices, including completing all required company training courses.
    Qualifications
     
    Essential knowledge and Experience
    • A Degree or Diploma in Agricultural or Biological science or relevant research experience is required.
    • A basic knowledge on pathology and entomology is desirable
    • Understanding of plant growth and nutrition is essential and experience in growing cereals is desirable
    • A basic understanding of plant genetics or breeding systems is a plus.
    • Understanding of Lean approach to processes is a plus
    • Experience in horticulture/agriculture and especially in GH environment
    • Experience of working with tight and changing deadlines.
    • Capability to use MS Office, especially Outlook, Excel, and other internal standard software
