    Nursery Data Systems Associate

    Description

    About The Team

The Komaza Nursery team is responsible for scaling up production to growing and delivering a million seedlings in 2018 alone with exponential growth in the years following. In order to hit these ambitious targets, we are composed of eager, self-driven, and detail-oriented teammates – who care as much about strictly following protocols as we do about hitting our numbers. As the result of this hard work and rapid growth, we have become one of Kenya’s largest propagators of Eucalyptus seedlings, and the world’s largest and most successful Melia Volkensii nursery.

    About This Role

Data is critical to managing the delicate seedling production process - from identifying the most effective production techniques to ensuring we hit our production targets in time for the rainy season. The Nursery Data Systems Associate will lead the development of systems to scale our Nursery operations to serve thousands of small-scale farmers with our unique microforestry model. You will also design and execute nursery logistics systems to produce millions of tree seedlings annually.

    What You Will Do

    • Design, build and continuously improve nursery data collection systems to support front-line, operational and strategic planning and decision-making
    • Manage processes and people to collect, validate, store, analyze and report all nursery operations-related data for millions of tree seedlings
    • Leverage data analysis to make concise, evidence-based recommendations to the senior leadership team for key operational and strategic decisions
    • Develop the inventory management and logistics systems for producing millions of tree seedlings for planting with rural farmers in coastal Kenya
    • Liaise with the Technology Development team to design, pilot and implement mobile applications that support data collection and work planning with a large-scale centralized nursery and future satellite nurseries across geographies

    What You Have

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Excellent data collection, analysis, modeling, and systems building skills
    • Technical forestry knowledge is not required; most importantly, you are a data-oriented systems designer who can learn the technical knowledge on the job
    • Passion for Komaza’s mission to lift rural farmers out of poverty through the rapid scaling of our microforestry model
    • Strong organisational, critical thinking, and communications skills with professionally-proficient spoken and written English

    How You Work

    • Define challenges and design solutions by questioning assumptions and seeking early-stage feedback
    • Build new systems through design-thinking lens and with a lean (“minimum viable product”) approach
    • Manage projects using plans, budgets, RACI matrices and scenario BVAs
    • Leverage MS Office, GSuite, Asana & Google calendar to optimize productivity

    You’re Also

    • High energy and enthusiastic
    • Flexible and self-motivated with the drive to do whatever necessary to get the job done
    • Willing and eager to learn and master new technical and professional skills
    • Self-directed and intellectually curious - you know how and when to seek feedback in the pursuit of continuous improvement
    • Proactive at identifying and communicating challenges and proposed solutions to successfully accomplish work

    What We Expect

You are a good fit for Komaza if you want to make a meaningful commitment to this role for a minimum of 2 years. This role is based at our headquarters in Kilifi, Kenya with regular travel to our Nursery in Ganze. The role offers competitive salary and benefits with potential for further career growth.
