    Editor, Swahili Radio

    Role Responsibility

    In this role you will edit and coordinate the output of other BBC Africa Hub services as required, and help disseminate material and expertise to the wider BBC. You will assess and ensure the teams have capacity and skills-set necessary for professional and sustainable production of radio and digital content, maximise the opportunities for effective collaboration, multilingual working and commitment to digital production and ensuring Risk Assessment forms are adequately completed for deployments.

    You will manage and monitor the budget, maintain contacts with relevant agencies and liaise with the Business Development team ensuring there is effective communication and productive relationships with re-broadcasting partners. This position will also need you to recruit, plan the training, supervise and motivate staff, coupled with developing senior talent with a view to taking the editorial lead.

    Are you the right candidate?

    The successful candidate will have sound editorial and political judgement, full command and up to date knowledge of Swahili (first or equivalent), fluency in English, both in written and spoken form and the ability to communicate effectively on all platforms. You will have a track record of original current affairs journalism on multimedia platforms with an extensive knowledge of the East African media landscape and its needs at a time of fast changing consumption habits by our passionate audiences. You will also have an in-depth understanding of international, regional and local news, experience of managing a remote team and an excellent broadcasting voice.

    This role will expect you to have significant recent experience as a broadcast or print journalist for the target area, a wide, thorough and up to date familiarity with the areas in Africa to which the service broadcasts and an in-depth understanding of the region’s history, politics, social issues, news and current affairs and culture. You will have a strong understanding of digital technology and social media with a real knowledge of the potential of developing media technology. You will have an in-depth knowledge of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, have excellent team management experience and the ability to manage budgets.
