    Lead Nurse, Dapper Project, Department of Psychiatry

    Ref Number – AD/12/357/19 (1 POST) (CHS)

    Background

    The Depression and Primary care Partnership for Effectiveness Implementation Research (DAPPER) project is a grant awarded to the University of Nairobi in collaboration with the University of California in San Francisco, Kenya Medical Research Institute and Makerere University to conduct effectiveness implementation hybrid randomized clinical trial of psychotherapy versus pharmacotherapy delivered by

    non-specialists in Kisumu County. The project is implemented with support from the Office of Research and Grants Advancement and Support.

    The position The project seeks to recruit a Lead Nurse to support the activities of the DAPPER project. The position is based at Kisumu County Hospital, Kisumu. The appointment is on contractual terms of one year, renewable based on performance and mutual agreement.

    Qualifications

    The candidate is expected to have:

    • Diploma level education in Nursing, with preference given to psychiatric nursing or certification/further training in psychiatry. ï‚· Experience with medical drugs delivery in Kisumu, Kenya is desirable but not a must.
    • Excellent communication skills 
    • Computer and internet access skills with daily access to internet
    • High interpersonal skills, high emotional intelligence with strong empathy
    • Attention to detail, top notch organizational skills, ability to proactively identify and solve problems. 
    • Ability to establish rapport with diverse people and productively lead teams.

    Job description

    • Assessment and treatment of study participants assigned with treatment with fluoxetine
    • Establishment of an outpatient clinic at Kisumu County Hospital in collaboration with the staff/health providers 
    • Assessment of other outpatients coming to or referred to psychiatric clinic
    • At least weekly internet telephone or email updates with principal investigators, local coinvestigators and UCSF based teams
    • Taking charge and assigning participants to locum nurses who may be recruited to the study as providers
    • Participate in the organization of the study participant recruitment, and participate in flow for fluoxetine arm of the intervention.
    • Collaborate with and provide feedback to the lead study coordinators, identify any problems or crises with study personnel or participants and bring them quickly to the attention of lead and assistant study coordinators and principals investigators as necessary.
    • To be on site for the study duration with exception of emergencies
    • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time
