    Associate Employment and Compliance

    Basic job summary:

    • The job holder will play a crucial role in ensuring legal compliance and providing legal support within the People and Culture function of the University.
    • The job holder will collaborate closely with the People and Culture Compliance Manager in providing legal expertise and guidance on employment law, labour relations, and regulatory compliance matters.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    Legal Compliance

    • Advise the People and Culture Compliance Manager on all emerging employment-related laws, Universities Act legislation and standards, regulations, and best practices.
    • Review and revise the People and Culture policies, procedures, protocols and employee handbooks to ensure legal and internal policy compliance.
    • Advise the People and Culture Compliance Manager on the legal implications of policies and practices to mitigate potential risks.
    • Monitor changes in employment laws and regulations and provide recommendations for updates or modifications as necessary.

    Employment and Labour Relations

    • Provide legal guidance and support to the People and Culture Compliance Manager on employment-related matters including but not limited to recruitment, terminations and disciplinary.
    • Conduct legal research on employment law issues and prepare legal opinions and memoranda.
    • Review, draft, maintain and regularly update all types of templates related to employment contracts and related documentation including but not limited to draft employment contracts, offer letters, confidentiality agreements, mutual separation agreements, discharge vouchers and other People and Culture-related legal documents.
    • Guide the People and Culture Compliance Manager on the legal aspects related to employee complaints, grievances other employment-related issues.
    • Assist in developing and maintaining positive relationships with labour unions, if applicable.
    • Collaborate with People and Culture Compliance Manager to handle labour disputes, negotiations, and collective bargaining agreements.

    Training and Education

    • In consultation with the People and Culture Compliance Manager develop and deliver training programs to educate the People and Culture team and the relevant internal stakeholders on legal compliance, employment law, and best practices.
    • In consultation with the People and Culture Compliance Manager prepare and update training materials, presentations, and resources related to employment law.

    Legal Documentation and Record Keeping

    • Maintain accurate and organized legal records and documentation related to People and Culture matters.
    • Prepare and review legal documents, including employment contracts, settlement agreements, and severance agreements.
    • Collaborate with the People and Culture Compliance Manager to ensure proper handling and storage of sensitive employee information.
    • Any other duty may be assigned from time to time by the University.

    Minimum Academic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Law.
    • Admission to the Bar with a valid practicing license
    • Any certification in a Human Resource certification will be an added advantage

    Experience:

    • At least 3 years’ post-admission experience
    • Experience in higher education is preferred.

    Competencies and Attributes

    • Proven experience working in employment law, labour relations, or a related legal field.
    • Sound knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and best practices.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
    • A critical thinker with high ability to analyze scenario and cases.
    • Ability to sustain stake holder’s engagement and industry relations
    • Strong written and verbal communication abilities, with the capability to explain complex legal concepts to non-legal professionals.
    • Proficiency in using legal research tools and software.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and also independently with minimal supervision.
