Bee Keeper at Segera Limited

Duties and Responsibilities

• Build, inspect or repair hives traditional log hive and modern hives
• Introduce a new colony or maintain an existing one
• Hive inspection for diseases/parasites, hygiene and health
• Monitor the size of the bee’s colony and amount of honey produced
• Collect honey from hives
• Prepare and bottle honey
• Breed queen bees and smaller, starter or ‘nucleus’ bee colonies
• Hosting guests during honey harvesting activities

The ideal candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:-

• Certificate/diploma in agriculture/apiculture or related field
• At least 1 – 3 years of relevant work experience as a bee keeper
• Able to communicate and write in English and Kiswahili.
• Knowledge of indigenous trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants in Laikipia that are beneficial to bees
• Knowledge of the yearly cycle and habits of bees
• Good bee handling skills so they know when and how to approach bees
• Knowledge of plant types and life cycles, and how and when plants produce nectar
• Skill in identifying bee diseases, parasites and knowledge of methods of disease control
• Knowledge to extract and assess quality of bee products such as honey, wax, pollen, royal jelly and propolis
• Carpentry skillsfor building and repairing hive boxes.
• Self-driven
• Leadership skills-To lead and train a team of existing bee keepers.
• Humble
• Good record keeping and attention to detail
• Valid driving license (vehicle and/or motorbike)with at least 3 years experience.
