    Head of Safety

    About the Job

    Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

    • Conduct the Safety Risk Assessments (SRAs) for Nairobi area and support the implementation of mitigation measures for static field sites and roving teams.
    • Responsible for providing safety advisory to DRC regional office in Nairobi and GSL staff.
    • Responding to safety concerns raised by international and regional National staff based in Nairobi, Kenya.
    • Responsible for all international staff movements in Kenya and those visiting from DRC operations outside Kenya.
    • Approve All Travel Clearances into Kenya from other Countries and advise accordingly on the Kenya safety situation.
    • Manage the Safety Level System (SLS) for Nairobi area, and ensure they strive to improve compliance with Minimum Operating Safety Standards (MOSS).
    • Lead the development and production of contextualized risk management measures, protocols and procedures in close collaboration with the Kenya safety team.
    • Facilitate programme access and continuity in Kenya through the provision of timely, quality and informed information and advice.
    • Manage safety related information and provide regular analysis and reporting through situation reports and advisories.
    • Maintain relevant safety documentation, data and records (training register, incident tracking, maps, etc.)
    • Produce daily, weekly and monthly safety digests (including daily updates, weekly summaries and monthly trend analysis).
    • Develop and facilitate/deliver safety-related training to DRC international and national staff at the regional office.
    • Coordinate with the HQ Crisis Management Team (CMT) when needed, and take part in the programme Incident Management Team (IMT).
    • Work with Programme staff and the Grants Manager to ensure that Safety is adequately budgeted for in grants, and support proposal development and donor reporting requirements where applicable.
    • Represent DRC Kenya on safety issues at inter-agency and donor meetings as requested.
    • Act as the focal point for the procurement of safety-related equipment, facilities and other resources for Kenya.
    • Any other duties as directed by the Country Director.

    About You

    To be successful in this role we expect the following:

    • A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as conflict studies, developmental and/or political sciences etc.
    • Minimum 5 years as Safety and Security Manager/Adviser for an NGO in a high risk/conflict zone (or equivalent role).
    • Proven experience in context/security analysis and advising humanitarian personnel.
    • Experience of developing and updating SOPs, contingency plans and other risk assessment and management documents.
    • Proven in-country experience liaising with UN missions or agencies.
    • Proven experience in crisis management.
    • Experience of conducting safety training for international and national staff, and experience of capacity building of national staff.
    • Ability to provide conflict analysis (written).
    • Other security management related qualification.
    • First aid qualification.
    • Fluent in spoken and written English. Kiswahili knowledge and ability to speak are an added advantage
