    Communications Assistant, The Institute for Human Development (IHD)

    Job Summary

    In liaison with the Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant will provide support to IHD communications activities, including communications planning and media relations in line with the global communications strategy.

    Responsibilities

    • Build and execute effective, dynamic and comprehensive internal and external communications plans;
    • Create stakeholder maps, refreshing them regularly based on internal and external influences;
    • Address gaps in communications with proactive, creative and resourceful solutions;
    • Build strong relationships with formal and informal leaders in the IHD;
    • Use a multi-media approach to communications, matching tactic to goal and end result;
    • Work with research and project teams to make their research relevant in the mainstream, including op-ed pieces;
    • Document through videography and photography, testimonials, etc. the significant moments from research projects in collaboration with Research Teams;
    • Develop communications collateral through consultation with stakeholders;
    • Work closely with the Manager, Digital Communications, to manage web and social media communications;
    • Collaborate with communications professionals in East Africa to ensure consistency in messaging and strategy, and to feed into corporate communications (e.g., social media platforms);
    • Work in collaboration with the Communications Officer, East Africa, to build relationships with regional and local media houses to showcase activities and their impact;
    • Support communications for events, and coordinate logistics and liaise with media for on-site events and promotions;
    • Research, write and edit compelling stories related to the IHD for internal and external use and promotion;
    • Contribute to internal AKU newsletters, profiling IHD activities and their impact;
    • Understand the differences between writing for print, digital and social channels and the use of these to tell good stories; and
    • Align significant communications plans with the global communication strategy.

    Requirements

    • Must have a Diploma or Degree in Communications, Journalism, Social Sciences or equivalent, from a recognized university or post-secondary institution;
    • Must have demonstrable experience in communications, marketing, media relations, public relations, or related field;
    • Practical knowledge and experience in issues management and crisis communications is key for this role;
    • Must have demonstrable experience with digital and print communications; and
    • Possess excellent writing and editing, event and web content management skills
