    Dean of Curriculum

    Job Description

    Working closely with the Principal and Deputy Principal, the Dean of Curriculum (DOC) holds primary responsibility for the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of Swaminarayan Academy Embakasi’s school’s curriculum.  As part of the administrative team, the DOC plays a central role in the success of the school.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist the Principal and Deputy Principal with teacher recruitment in line with student enrolments, in accordance with school policy (including child safeguarding and welfare).
    • Accountable for teacher induction, teacher training and development: ensures regular lesson observations and constructive feedback take place, designs INSET sessions and provides information and advice on external training for staff
    • Holds regular staff meetings and INSET sessions for teachers. Ensures that major points are included in the Minutes of the meeting and filed for future reference
    • Arranges teaching cover when teachers are absent from work; ensuring that teachers have instructions available on what is to be taught in their absence using the Scheme of Work. Briefs the cover teacher accurately to ensure students have continuity of class content.
    • Ensures teachers are up to date with administrative procedures including registers and progress reports. Ensures teachers produce termly Schemes of Work and that these are filed and referred to systematically to avoid repetition of work.
    • Keep track of student and teacher performance and maintains class averages at optimal levels in agreement with the School Principal and Deputy Principal.
    • Responsible for the allocations of teachers to classes and workload.
    • Organizes the teaching and learning timetable including for remedial classes in the school
    •  Class Timetabling: carries out intake procedures, student placement and testing, progress tests and exit tests.
    • Ensures access and provision of self-study material and internet to students after class. Develops self-access materials including reference materials, library books and videos.
    • Resources development: ordering materials which are appropriate to the needs of teachers and students on termly basis
    • Consistently develops and revises the booklists for all the subjects in collaboration with the H.O.Ds.
    • Ensure all teachers administer exams, mark, submit results and analysis is done within the set deadlines
    • In charge of all the exams and assessments in the school. 
    • Analyze each student performance and organize for remedial lessons for the weak learners
    • Ensure student report forms are duly filled and signed within the set deadlines
    • Counsels students on all academic issues such as examinations, choice of subjects and ensure career guidance talks to all students
    • Liaises with other Administrative staff on students’ pastoral care, where necessary
    • Carries out classroom teaching when required, according to number of enrolments at the School and projects being undertaken
    • Attends conferences and trainings, mutually agreed upon with the Principal and Deputy Principal.
    • Assists the Deputy Principal where necessary.
    • Organizes interviews and induction of new students with the help of the Deputy Principal and Principal
    • Ensures that classrooms are set up correctly for use each morning and that windows and doors are secure
    • Any other duty assigned by the seniors

    Skills, Abilities and Competencies Desired:

    • P1/DTE/Bachelor’s Degree in related field; a master’s degree will be an added advantage.
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in similar position in a high performing school.
    • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience with exemplary results; experience working in a high performing school is strongly preferred
    • Demonstrated efficacy in raising academic achievement for low-income, urban students;
    • A deep passion for social justice and equity for all children; a strong belief that all students can achieve at the highest levels regardless of demography
    • Excellent communication skills

    • Exceptional organizational skills
    • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure
    • Excellent administration skills
    • Experience with Excel spread sheet
    • Knowledge of ICT and data analysis
