    Environmental Law Specialist

    Duties And Responsibilities

    • Under the general supervision of the Head, Montevideo Coordination and Delivery Unit, and the day-to-day supervision of a Legal Officer at the Montevideo Coordination and Delivery Unit, the consultant will:
    • Develop an annotated outline of the Legislative Study on Mainstreaming Biodiversity in National Legislation on Natural Resources for Food and Agriculture and share the outline with Law Division and FAO LEGN for comments.
    • Map out key issues relating to national legislation in the areas under UNEP and FAO mandates in which the CBD decisions on biodiversity mainstreaming are relevant (including mainstreaming in relation to the Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (Nagoya Protocol) and the Protocol on Biosafety (Cartagena Protocol;)
    • Identify and expound on key issues and approaches in biodiversity mainstreaming for national legislators.
    • Clarifying the opportunities of mainstreaming biodiversity (notably ecosystems approach) to take a more holistic approach in national legislation in natural resources focusing on the triple planetary crises of biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution, any relevant developments in the Kunming- Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and the relevant Sustainable Development Goals as well as integrating human rights concerns.
    • Identifying a series of practical case studies from different areas of UNEP and FAO mandates as text boxes.

    Qualifications/special Skills

    • An advanced university degree (master’s degree, or equivalent) in international environmental law, or related field is required.
    • A first-level degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two (2) additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • A minimum of 7 years of progressive working experience in the field of environmental law, or a related field such as on biodiversity law is required.

    Languages

    • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
