    Finance Manager Water & Sanitation

    Your role

    You are part of the Innovative Finance team of Aqua for All and work closely with the Innovative Finance Managers as well as the Regional Programme Manager for East Africa (all three based in the Netherlands). On the ground, you will be part of the Kenyan deal team and work hand in hand with two local staff members.

    You are expected to manage existing relationships and to originate and grow the country portfolio, while contributing to knowledge products that support learning and scaling of initiatives within the region and globally. You contribute to all stages of a transaction from origination, deal structuring, due diligence, negotiation, contracting, implementation of partnerships and monitoring. The role has a strong business development angle while it also requires programme management skills.

    The scope of the work focuses on Aqua for All’s collaboration with stakeholders in Kenya. It is designed to be flexible and not fully predefined to allow for the content to evolve and be adjustable with emerging strategic direction and partnership trajectories (also in other countries) throughout the year.

    This exciting role includes the following responsibilities:

    • Support the sustainable growth of Aqua for All’s portfolio with Financial Institutions in East Africa, specifically Kenya and Uganda;
    • Work on origination and execution of blended finance, impact-linked transactions (technical assistance, first-loss, partial guarantees, results-based financing, etc.) and due diligence;
    • Support the Innovative Finance Managers in monitoring and implementing contracted partnerships with Kenya’s Financial Institutions;
    • Manage in-country partnerships and relations, both financial and technical WASH stakeholders;
    • Provide technical advice and guidance to FI partners to develop responsive products/or projects for the WASH sector businesses and service providers in Kenya;
    • Advice and support Innovative Finance Managers (based in The Netherlands) and Impact Management officer (based in Nairobi);
    • Represent Aqua for All on regional and country-level stakeholder events and partner activities.

    What you bring

    • A passion for making finance work to create positive impact on water and sanitation services for low-income communities
    • Between 8-15 years of work experience, preferably in development finance, banking, corporate finance or (impact) investments domain
    • Master’s degree in a finance and/or WASH business-related study
    • Solid understanding of Kenya’s WASH services sector, IWRM, MSME and utility landscape, policies and regulations and nexus with climate change and impact on the sector
    • Deep knowledge of the FI landscape in Kenya (and the region) and recent innovations and programmes to unlock public/private capital for the WASH sector
    • Good understanding of financial analysis, impact investments and blended finance and of how impact investors and financial institutions work
    • High proficiency in English
    • Proficiency in working with Excel and PowerPoint
    • Willing to travel to rural Kenya, other African countries and The Netherlands
    • Self-starter with good communications and relationship management skills
    • Relationship-focused person with a keen eye for impactful partnership deals
    • Culturally sensitive with ability to adapt and work within a multi-cultural context
    • Clear and open mindset, with ability to turn problems into opportunities and deliver results
