    Gender Officer - Social Norms Diagnosis Project

    JOB SUMMARY

    • Reporting to the Project manager; the Gender Officer is expected to work collaboratively with the consultant, program coordinator and other technical staff to lead the implementation of project’s gender interventions and will work with the project team to ensure the activities are well integrated in the overall project. S/he will provide guidance and technical input where necessary, especially on gender analysis, social analysis and action, gender transformative approaches, impact assessments and wider gender mainstreaming. S/he will ensure stakeholders’ participatory consultations take gender into consideration and that the needs of women and girls, men and boys are identified and prioritized. S/he will act as resource person in capacity building, knowledge sharing events and other relevant activities.

    ROLES AND RESPOSIBILITIES
    Technical support to study implementation (40%)

    • Work closely with the research and data collection teams to gather insights and share feedback as appropriate.
    • Coordinate with other project team members to ensure seamless execution of the study.
    • Ensure that the gender checklists are used and should be able to work with project manager in revising and revisiting the gender sensitive indicators for improved mainstreaming.
    • Support the development of a community gender awareness action plan related to specific behaviors that influence towards accessing Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health (ASHR) services.
    • Facilitating critical reflection sessions to promote awareness of gender equality and harmful social/cultural norms, constructions of masculinity/femininity, rights, Sexual/Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), etc., and to develop skills and attitudes around self-efficacy.
    • Take lead in documentation of lessons learnt during the study and best practices as well as dissemination on the same.
    • Ensure adherence to safeguarding and Protection from Sexual Harassment , Exploitation and Abuse policies during the study.

    Monitoring and Documentation (30%)

    • Review study reports just to ensure that gender issues related to the study are clearly captured.
    • Conduct field visits to study sites and review of ongoing project activities; with a view to ascertain that activities are ongoing as planned.
    • Engage with local communities, Within the identified location of study, to understand and address the challenges related to Gender Based Violence and poor Sexual Reproductive Health Rights outcomes.
    • Collaborate with community leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders to ensure buy - in and participation where necessary.

    Networking and Collaboration-20%

    • Represent CARE in relevant community development planning meetings.
    • Establish and maintain a good working relationship with other CARE colleagues and project staff,
    • Partner agencies, County government, CBOs, collaborators, other stakeholders and enhance CARE image.

    Other Responsibilities as assigned (10%)

    • Perform any other official duties as may be deemed relevant and necessary by the supervisor.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Degree in Social Sciences, Gender and development studies or other relevant discipline coupled.
    • At least 3 years’ experience in coordinating position in gender equality outcome results delivery and program quality in development programs in the following areas: gender equality, women’s rights, organizational strengthening,
    • Strong gender related technical skills, including ability to understand the different and complex dynamic affecting / supporting adequate delivery on the gender equality results.
    • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    • Demonstrated commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
    • Excellent written, verbal English and presentation/communication skills.
    • Demonstrable ability to develop and implement gender transformative results outcomes, systems and plans, and applied knowledge and understanding of feminist approaches and principles.
    • Experience in conducting a gender related baseline studies including GPA.
    • Ability to foster and strengthen partnerships amongst different stakeholders and civil society actors.
    • In depth understanding of underlying causes of poverty, vulnerability, and gender inequality in
    • Kenya with good knowledge of the political, economic, social and technological environment is desirable.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the Kenya’s women’s Rights movement.
    • Excellent inter-personal, facilitation and communication skills.
