    Nursing Services Manager

    Main Purpose of the Job

    1. To coordinate and provide direction and guidance to the Nursing department in the hospital, mindful of the uniqueness of the sub departments therein. 
    2. To promote and maintain caring and highly professional standards of nursing care meeting the needs of the patients in all aspects and promoting job satisfaction for nursing team. 
    3. Toprovide leadership in quality management, patient care, operational and human resource management, patient safety/experience.

    Key Responsibilities 

    1. Practice as a professional nurse on regular basis with confidence, authority, and expertise. Ensure the continuity of the expected standards of care by effective management of staff and resources Organize hospital-based education sessions. 
    2. Ensure that staffs act in accordance with the statutory regulations and related guidance. 
    3. Particular attention is drawn to those regulations concerning control of drugs, health and safety, data protection and food hygiene. Ensure that all patient valuables are dealt with as identified in the patient valuables policy. 
    4. Mentor, coach and develop nursing staff in patient care ensuring that their performance meets the hospital standards of care. Provide guidance and mentorship to staff and trainees to ensure all patients are treated with dignity, privacy and respect and that the patients are encouraged to be involved in decision making related to their care. 
    5. Maintain nursing quality assurance standards and develop audit process of the nursing practice. 
    6. Advocate improvement in clinical practice and development of unit-based policies and procedures. 
    7. Maintain infection control practices and standards. Be aware of all hospital management policies in force and act in accordance with those policies. Investigate and document quality assurance incidents on staff, patient’s visitors, and others promptly and thoroughly. Ensure that all complaints are investigated in accordance with the hospital policy and procedure. Development of patient care programs, policies, and procedures that describe how patient needs for nursing care, treatment, and services are assessed, evaluated, and met. 
    8. Development and implementation of the plans for providing nursing care, treatment, and services including determination of types and numbers of nursing personnel necessary to provide nursing care. 
    9. Development of a patient focused team orientated culture, working in conjunction with all other medical, clinical, therapeutic disciplines to ensure optimal service and superior outcomes. 
    10. Development and implementation of programs enhancing a culture of safety and accountability related to all aspects of patient care. 
    11. Supervision and coordination of nursing personnel and delivery of nursing care on a 24-hour basis. 
    12. Ensure patients safety following the 6 International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs) (patient identification, effective communication, safety of high alert medication, ensure correct site procedure and surgery, reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections, reduce the risk of patient harm resulting fromfalls) 
    13. Ensure prioritization of patient needs in a documented nursing care plan. 
    14. Ensure that doctors/consultants are updated on patient’s progress and critical values in a timely manner 
    15. Provides leadership in improving patient care, maintaining standards of care, directing and teaching personnel in a variety of setting. 
    16. Ensure that all invasive nursing procedures are done under aseptic technique 
    17. Prepare, review, act and submit Quality Indicator reports to the Quality and Standards department monthly 
    18. Prepare daily statistics and submit them to the Hospital manager 
    19. Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality is maintained at all times 
    20. Participate in emergency response complaints/concerns and demonstrate follow-up and improvement. Covering the hospital as and when required. Adhere to Government and respective professional standards of care and treatment of patients as guided by the Nursing Council of Kenya

    Person Specification

    1. Diploma in nursing KRCHN, BSCN is an added advantage. 
    2. BLS/ACLS trained. At least 10 years of nursing experience
    3. At least 5 years of management experience
    4. Proven ability to lead teams
    5. Ability to enact policies and procedures
    6. Ability to communicate effectively
    7. A comprehensive understanding of the nursing process and measurement
    8. Training in management or administration is desirab
    9. Overseeing outpatient department to ensure waiting time is minimized, improving nursing care and providing an enabling environment for specialists on duty.
    10. Actively support the governing bodies of the hospital including but not limited to Board of Directors, clinicians Forum and management team.
    11. Implementation of effective, ongoing programs to measure, assess and improve nursing care, treatment, and services delivered to patients. 
    12. Integration of complex data to formulate decisions, develop programs and plans that optimize health, promote wellness, manage illness, and prevent complications or secondary disabilities. 
    13. Creation of an environment and culture that enables the hospital to fulfill its mission by meeting or
    14. exceeding its goals, conveying the hospital mission to all nursing staff, holding staff accountable for
    15. performance, motivating staff to improve performance and being responsible for the measurement, assessment, and continuous improvement of the departments. 
    16. Effective control of resources

    Clinical Responsibilities 

    1. Always maintain a safe practice and environment for the patients. Act as a role model to other nurses on the unit. 
    2. Maintain personal contact with patients periodically ensuring that they understand their treatment and that their needs are met. 
    3. Communicate with other professional staff to ensure that the care given to patients is of appropriate standard. 
    4. Take responsibility for ensuring maintenance of accurate records/ documentation for: 
      • Nursing assessment
      • Follow up nursing care plan
      • Family and patient education
    5. Make sure that all information concerning patients and their treatment always remain confidential. 

    Professional Development 

    1. Maintain and develop own professional profile and identify development needs. 
    2. Participate in performance appraisal where annual goals and objectives are set and met. 
    3. Be involved in people management in coordination with the HR department. 
    4. Ensure that all the nursing units function effectively and efficiently
    5. Lead in the development and enhancement of scope of services. 
    6. Participation in timely reporting. 
    7. Regularly assess the performance of nursing staff to determine skills / training requirements schedule
    8. and organize training programs (CNE’s) for the Qualified Nurses 
    9. Ensures that the wards are fully and efficiently utilized depending on patient load and flows 
    10. Ensures that any service issues raised by relatives and / or patients are promptly addressed and reported to the Medical Services Manager /Hospital Manager 
    11. Ensures that the qualified nurses accurately perform all the procedures / tasks as assigned to themincluding admission, discharge, drug administration, clinical observations, infection control, EMT duties and others.
    12. Ensures that rotas & leave schedules are followed liaising with the Human Resources team and Ward In
    13. Charges to ensure that staffing levels are adequate to meet the needs of our patients. 
    14. Regularly assess the performance of nursing staff to determine skills / training requirements schedule and organize training programs (CNE’s) for the Qualified Nurses Liaise with Ward in Charges to organize for regular assessment and training of patient attendant 
    15. Support marketing events within the facilities 
    16. Ensure that all the nurses have valid nursing practice licenses 
    17. Ensure all sentinel incidents/events are recorded and reported within 24 hours using the provided tools 
    18. Collaborate with Infection Control Coordinator to maintain and enforce infection control standards per
    19. the hospital manual and observe the infection control bundles (SSI, VAP, CAUTI and CLABSI) where applicable. 
    20. Engaging the multi-disciplinary team actively during ward rounds and receives handover reports from the outgoing night covering nurse. 
    21. Liaise with the ward in-charges to ensure proper and detailed documentation of patient notes and
    22. review; consulting with fellow clinicians, consultants when need be Keep a link with other professionals and networking to be up to date with the nursing practice 
    23. Maintain credit hours for the hospital and the nursing council of Keny
