Oncology Nurse at Nairobi West Hospital Ltd

The Oncology Nurse is responsible for providing supportive cancer related patient care by maintaining accurate records and in the maintenance of professional standards through continuing education and development and providing emotional support to patients and their families.

Academic and professional qualifications

• KRON, Bachelor of Science in Nursing/RN
• Must be a Kenya Registered Nurse with a valid practicing license from NCK.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in relevant field
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to offer emotional support to parents, guardians, and family members.
• Working knowledge in an oncology unit with specialized equipment.
• The ability to work in a team.
• The ability to offer comfort to ill oncology patients

Other added advantages

• BLS & ACLS certified.
• Good interpersonal skills& communications kills
• Good customer care skills.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Assessing and developing a personalized plan of care for each patient
• Administering medications and treatments as directed by the doctor, medical oncologist, and other health care professionals
• Assessing, observing, recording, and reporting changes in patient's condition to doctors and other health care providers
• Health educating and providing patients with information about their disease, treatment plan, medications, home care needs, follow-up appointments, and referrals to community resources
• Working with patients' families to ensure they have information about their loved one's disease and treatment
• Providing emotional support for patients, families, and caregivers
• Encouraging patients to express concerns or feelings related to their cancer diagnosis without fear of judgement
• Patient Care (the planning, assessment, implementation and evaluation phase of care) is a continuous process from the point of receiving the patient,
• Rendering emergency intervention as per ER Doctor, admission process or initiating discharge of the patient.
• To obtain and document a patient assessment which incorporates all available data/information.
• To utilize techniques of observation, interview, measurement and physical examination (if necessary) in making an assessment.
• To identify from assessment actual and potential problems in collaboration with patient and other medical personnel.
