    Palliative Care Specialist

    Overall Responsibility

    • The Palliative Care Specialist will provide comprehensive care to patients with life-limiting illnesses by addressing their physical, emotional and psychosocial needs. The role focuses on improving quality of life, alleviating suffering, and supporting patients and families through serious illness and end-of-life care.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Assess and manage pain and other distressing symptoms such as nausea, breathlessness, anxiety, and fatigue in patients with serious or terminal illnesses.
    • Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
    • Provide end-of-life care and guide patients and families in decision-making aligned with their values and goals.
    • Facilitate advanced care planning and ensure that Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) or other directives are respected and implemented.
    • Offer emotional, and psychological support to patients and caregivers facing life-limiting conditions.
    • Conduct family meetings to discuss prognosis, treatment goals, and care preferences.
    • Educate patients and families on disease progression, symptom management, and available care options.
    • Work closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and psychologists to deliver holistic palliative care.
    • Coordinate home-based palliative care, where applicable, and facilitate seamless transitions of care.
    • Provide training and mentorship to healthcare professionals on palliative care principles and practices.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent.
    • Postgraduate qualification or certification in Palliative Care.
    • At least 3 years of clinical experience, with a minimum of 1 year in palliative care 
    • Valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council
