    Peacebuilding Intern

    Purpose:

    The Peacebuilding Intern will support the Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (HDP) project in the implementation of activities in Garissa County (Dadaab) operation. He/She is primarily responsible for supporting the implementation of the peacebuilding project activities aimed at ensuring the targeted indicators and project outputs are achieved. The Peacebuilding Intern tasks includes, but not limited to working directly with Refugee community in Dadaab Refugee Camps and host community within the project area and local authorities to strengthen their capacity to improve safety at the community level. Will directly be involved to reviewing assessments to cases of insecurity claims, facilitating community dialogues on conflict, provide training on conflict management and support the strengthening of community – formal security provider relationships. He/She will adhere to DRC security procedures and regulations, adherence to DRC standard regulations and operational procedures (including the Code of Conduct, the DRC Programme Manual and administrative regulations). The intern will work with a team of HDP unit staff which include officers, assistants, general support and community workers.

    Key Responsibilities:
    Project Management and Development:

    • Assist in the development and implementation of HDP project workplans focused on peacebuilding interventions.
    • Strategically mobilize targeted community, security, and local administration participants in the project target areas.
    • Support project assistant in delivering trainings and workshops to the targeted participants.
    • Support in the organization and planning of community dialogue meetings involving community leaders, stakeholders, and project staff in peacebuilding interventions.
    • Ensure other tasks assigned by the Team Leader are executed promptly, efficiently and in accordance with DRC operational guidelines.
    • Ensure accountability in all expenses and compile all receipts according to DRC financial guidelines. 

     Monitoring, Reporting and Evaluation:

    • Maintain accurate records and documentation of project activities and outcomes.
    • Support the MEAL Officer to collect and analyze data to improve project approaches and interventions.
    • Support in documentation of best practices, success stories and case studies to enhance project outcomes.
    • Submit weekly activity reports to the supervisor.

    Coordination & Partnerships:

    • Support the coordination of project activities, including scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and taking minutes.
    • Collaborate with the HDP team for smooth implementation of peacebuilding activities.
    • Promote collaboration and synergy between the DRC host community projects and the similar projects/groups in the refugee camps.

    Qualifications & Experience: 

    • Exceptional understanding of local dynamics that lead to conflict and violence (in arid and Semi-Arid parts of Kenya).
    • Open-minded and committed to finding non-violent ways to mitigate conflict and promote inter-communal peace and collaboration.
    • Cultural and gender sensitivity.
    • A team player: able to demonstrate a constructive, cooperative and problem-solving approach.
    • Knowledge of the key issues/challenges and trends with regard to sustainable peacebuilding initiatives in refugee and host community set up.
    • Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and knowledge of spreadsheet and database package.
    • Flexible, with ability to work and handle multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.
    • Strong planning, organization and problem-solving skills with ability to work hands-on, independently, and within a team
    • Strong communication (written & spoken) and interpersonal skills.

    Education: 

    • A Diploma or university Degree preferably in Peace studies, Conflict Management, Social sciences or closely related field

    Languages: 

    • Written and spoken fluency in English and Kiswahili 
    • Fluency in Somali language is an added advantage
