Job Description: 

• To perform venipuncture and skin punctures competently and expediently in order to obtain samples for analysis.

Responsibilities

• Always identifies correct in-Patients of all ages by comparing name and medical record number on requisition with name and medical record number on Patients wristband before venipuncture.
• Always identifies correct out-patients of all ages by requesting the patient or guardian to state his/her full name and comparing with the name on the requisition and confirm UHID number.
• Draw blood samples properly using established Laboratory procedures and with as little Patient discomfort as possible. Instruct patients the correct way to collect urine, sputum etc.
• Always accurately label, initial and date all samples collected, maintaining awareness of timed specimen and their importance.
• Prioritize STAT, urgent and scheduled orders.
• Maintain clean and neat workstation.
• Maintain adequate supplies in workstation.
• Follow all Laboratory safety rules and report any possible hazards to safety officer.
• Share appropriate communication with other Laboratory staff involving difficult venipuncture, timed specimen etc.
• Orient and guide new staff and students assigned to Phlebotomy workstation
• Perform any other duty assigned from time to time by your supervisor.
