    Protection Assistant- Samburu

    Job Description

    • Under the direct supervision of the protection officer the Protection assistant will be responsible for the actual implementation of the protection interventions in Samburu/Turkana County focusing on Individual Protection Assistance through crisis case management, community risk responses, community engagement and information dissemination, targeted in-kind assistance, service mapping and protection mainstreaming. Throughout nutrition, Economic Recovery and Development (ERD), WASH, Food Assistance, Agriculture, and protection response.

    Major Responsibilities:

    • Conducting Systematic outreach services to targeted population to facilitate service access by everyone including the most vulnerable population.
    • Offer Individual protection assistance: Through survival risk screening, issuance of various targeted assistance through interventions such as In-kind assistance, reasonable accommodation, cash assistance and facilitate referral/ tracking with an outcome verification. 
    • Documenting activities and client data: Accurately document protection assistance information, and safely store all information and records while adhering to the data protection policies in place.  
    • Reporting: Submitting weekly/monthly reports to the Protection officer, Contribute to development of regular activity/internal and donor reports on grant activities, indicators, and achievement.
    • Supervising community volunteers: Ensure that incentive workers are working as scheduled, provide coaching on their roles, and consolidate their activity reports.
    • Working with the community Based Protection structures leaders and members to ensure that they participate in the IRC interventions, building their capacity as first line responders for sustained program.
    • Community mobilization and engagement: With the support of the community volunteers, mobilize the community for various interventions such as community focus group discussions, trainings and information sharing on protection focusing on rights, entitlements, available services and channels for reporting complaints and feedback.
    • Help in design, development and dissemination of protection Information education and communication materials.

    Key Working Relationships:

    • Position Reports to:  Protection Officer
    • Position directly supervises:  Community volunteers.
    • Indirect Reporting: None

    Other Internal and/or external contacts:

    • Internal: Health, MEAL, GEDI, WPE, and support Team
    • External:  County Government, Donors, Other OPs, and IPs

    Qualifications

    • Education: Diploma or university Degree in Law, gender and development, Counseling Psychology, community development, Social Sciences, or any other related degree.

    Work Experience: 

    • At least 3 years program experience, including protection, mainstreaming in a humanitarian context with protection focus, gender, GBV/WPE, Child protection, durable solutions etc.
    • Work experience with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) on refugee rights, human
    • rights, peace building and/or governance.
    • Experience working with forced migrants (refugees, IDPs), vulnerable communities, conducting outreaches/awareness, referrals, assessments. Knowledge of international and national legal and or policy frameworks relating to refugees' protection is strongly desirable.

    Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

    • Knowledge of protection principles, norms, and practices
    • Community mobilization, capacity building, project management including staff and budget management experience desirable.
    • Self-driven with ability to engage well with the community.
    • Ready to work in hardship areas with the ability to work under pressure in a strenuous environment with basic services available.
    • Team player with good interpersonal and basic computer skills
    • Language Skills: Fluency in English and Kiswahili, Knowledge of local language is a plus.
