    Protection Interpreter

    About the Job

    The Protection Interpreter supports in oral interpretation and written translations to and from Somali / English and contributes to the achievement of the protection objectives. He/she works closely with the Protection Delegates.

    This is a resident/National position based in Nairobi with frequent travel to Somalia.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Contributes to the analysis and understanding of Protection of Civilian Population (PCP) issues in Somalia and more specifically in the geographical area covered
    • Supports the protection delegates in establishing and maintaining a network of relevant interlocutors
    • Contributes to the preparation of oral and written representations and supports through translation or interpretation of these documents
    • Translates information and assists in the preparation of dissemination material related to protection activities/issues adapted to the Somali context
    • Translates correspondence and other essential documents from Somali to English and vice versa
    • Supports the department in gathering and analyzing protection-related information

    Minimum qualifications and required competencies

    • University Degree in English Education, International development or qualification in a related field of study
    • 4 years’ experience in a similar field in a Humanitarian organization
    • Knowledge of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)/ International Human Rights Law (IHRL) is an asset
    • Ability to analyse the socio-political and cultural environment, the dynamics of conflict zone and inherent humanitarian/protection challenges
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
    • High level of confidentiality and discretion
    • Fluency in written and spoken English and Somali languages
    • Computer proficiency especially in MS Office suite
