Scrub Technicians at Tenwek Hospital

Job summary: 

• To assist the surgeons during a procedure, prepare and organize operating rooms, clean and sterilize equipment and maintain sterile environment.

Responsibilities

• Setting up the instruments and equipment that is required for the procedure.
• Sterilizing equipment and taking an inventory to ensure there are enough supplies for surgery.
• Preparing sterile operating rooms for surgeries.
• Taking a count of all surgical instruments and supplies prior to the operation.
• Recounting surgical instruments and supplies at the end of the end of the operation
• Preparing patients for surgery by washing and disinfecting incision sites.
• Providing support during surgery by passing instruments and other supplies.
• Staying up-to-date on surgical technology, medical terminology and procedures.
• Working well with surgeons, Fellows, Resident surgeons, Perioperative Nurses and general surgical team.
• Helping provide great patient care
• Assist surgical team by taking tissue samples and other specimens during surgery for further analysis.
• Maintaining an overall environment throughout the surgery
• To ensure that there is teamwork in the unit.
• Facilitate patient comfort
• Facilitate communication with patients and relatives.
• Facilitate management of patient records recognizing rules of patients’ confidentiality and privacy.
• Facilitate the maintenance of department inventory and supplies as instructed.

During the surgical procedure, the scrub Technician can take the role of:

• Circulating personnel, with the following additional duties:
• Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient
• Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens
• Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis
• Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly -Handles patient documentation)
• Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery
• Scrub personnel, with the following additional duties:
• Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them.
• Give Spiritual care.
• Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
