    WASH Officer

    Task description
    Under the direct supervision of WASH Specialist (Sanitation & Hygiene), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

    • Contribute to supporting the government: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, and other key line ministries for the planning and monitoring of rural water supply and sanitation programmes.
    • Participate in capacity building activities for National and County-led teams to support pro-gramme implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
    • Support roll-out of real time monitoring information systems, mechanisms, and procedures in the area of sanitation and hygiene in communities and facilities including annual sector reviews.
    • Participate in advocacy activities designed to influence Government of Kenya and counties to prioritise sanitation and hygiene in the development agenda and ensure government’s leadership by actively sharing information and knowledge through evidence-based programming.
    • Support UNICEF WASH team in designing the appropriate strategic plan for Sanitation and Hygiene and to sustain behavior changes.
    • Support UNICEF WASH team to co-author and present research for visibility (e.g., journal articles, case studies, and webinars); in addition to preparing Kenya Technical reports and inputs including sanitation factsheets and profiles.
    • Support UNICEF WASH team to roll out the Safely Managed On-site Sanitation (SMOSS); National Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Protocol, Roadmap.
    • Support in internal sectoral progress reports for management, donors, and partners.
    • Participate in fundraising activities to mobilise domestic resources through structures like Kenya Sanitation Alliance to end open defecation and advance SMS in Kenya by 2025.
    • Undertake technical and supervisory field missions and report critical issues, bottleneck, best practice, challenges, and impact to the supervisor.

    Furthermore, the UN Volunteers are required to:

    • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
    • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
    • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
    • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
    • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
    • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
