ICE works with community groups and schools in Tharaka Nithi, Machakos, Meru, Murang’a, Embu and Kiambu counties. ICE is committed to buttressing traditional knowledge in community-based environmental and resource management initiatives and facilitating culture-based learning that would lead to social and ecological well-being of the earth community. ICE is well linked with like-minded organisations in Kenya, Africa and beyond who are pioneering innovative culture-based strategies and policy advocacy for recuperation, recognition and promotion of indigenous knowledge and practices relevant to environmental rehabilitation and management. Vision To empower communities to harness indigenous knowledge for healthy people and ecosystems. Mission To promote indigenous knowledge for environmental conservation and to enhance the livelihoods of local communities towards sustainable development. Objectives To support conservation of at least 60,000 hectares of forests and riparian ecosystems in Kiambu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Machakos, Murang’a and Embu Counties by December 2020. To enhance food sovereignty and economic empowerment among 5000 households in Kiambu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Machakos, Murang’a and Embu Counties by December 2020. To enhance advocacy capacity and networking of 6 communities on natural resource management and food sovereignty and emerging issues in Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Machakos and Embu by December 2020. To enhance research-based project implementation and knowledge management on natural resource management and food sovereignty and related emerging human rights issues in Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Embu and Machakos by Dec 2020. To enhance the capacity of the Advisory Board, the ICE staff, community committees and improve facilities and equipment for effective implementation of ICE mandate.
