    News Editor TEA

    Reporting to the Managing Editor, the jobholder will be responsible for the coordination of news gathering operations of The East African, ensuring that the coverage is competitive and comprehensive in both print and digital platforms and that the written copy meets established editorial objectives, journalistic ethics, house style and is delivered within set deadlines.

    Key responsibilities

    • Taking responsibility for the quality and quantity of the editorial content of the news pages;
    • Maintaining a diary of events;
    • Taking up big news assignment and filing stories;
    • Assessing the political, social and economic climate and anticipating likely developments for coverage;
    • Briefing reporters and advising them on coverage and the writing of stories;
    • Enforcing deadlines and productivity targets for the Reporters;
    • Reviewing the written stories to ensure that they meet editorial objectives, house style and journalistic ethics;
    • Liaising with the Managing Editor, Assistant Editor and Chief Sub-Editor to choose the main stories of the day/week, writing or re-writing them;
    • Ensuring delivery of digital content; and
    • Adhering to Social Media Policy as updated from time to time.

    Qualifications, Experience & skills

    • Bachelor’s degree in Communication or its equivalent from a recognized institution;
    • Relevant professional qualifications;
    • Ability to write exclusive stories based on interviews and complex business reports;
    • Six (6) years of relevant work and supervisory experience;
    • Ability to communicate both inside and outside the organisation;
    • Ability to develop plans, programs, SOPS, and coordination of workflows
    • Possess analytical and administrative skills;
    • Possess people management skills.

    Partnerships, Monitoring & Evaluation Manager

    Nation Media Group regularly engages in partnerships with organisations in pursuit of causes of mutual interest, with a view to positively transform society, and seeks to recruit an experienced and self-motivated individual to the position of Partnerships, Monitoring & Evaluation Manager in the Editorial Department.

    The job holder will lead NMG in forging Editorial partnerships to deliver on its vision and mission, in line with the Group’s Editorial Guidelines. He/she will be charged with expanding NMG’s partnerships base besides serving as NMG’s contact person for existing partnerships.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Identify new partnership opportunities;
    • Develop concepts and proposals for partnership;
    • Initiate discussions with potential partners, leading to the signing of memoranda of understanding and contracts;
    • Maintain regular communication with partner organisations;
    • Prepare annual work plans for partnership activities;
    • Lead implementation of partnership projects by ensuring all agreed activities, including generation, production and dissemination of Editorial content, training and event organisation, are undertaken;
    • Develop a systematic monitoring and evaluation framework for partnership projects;
    • Monitor budgets and ensure effective and efficient use of partnership funds;
    • Prepare and submit reports to partner organisations as per the terms of contract or memorandum of understanding.

    Qualifications and experience

    • Master’s degree in journalism/media studies or equally relevant qualifications/experience;
    • Extensive experience and demonstrated understanding of the media;
    • Proficiency in conceptualising projects and securing partnerships;
    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically about complex issues;
    • Ability to foster and enhance collaboration between a wide range of partners;
    • Ability to lead projects and work across teams, departments, organisations and markets;
    • Business development experience;
    • Project management experience, with the ability to lead and handle multiple time-sensitive and cross-functional projects;
    • Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation.

    Senior Reporter TEA

    Reporting to the News Editor, the jobholder will be responsible for covering business news events, writing and submitting factual and balanced stories for publication within set deadlines, doing analyses as well as handling and giving input to special reports.

    Key responsibilities

    • Developing, reporting and writing business news and feature stories for The EastAfrican Newspaper so that no major rewrite is required or no extensive additional report is needed;
    • Attending assigned news functions, taking notes on location, carrying out interviews, checking facts and making an audio/visual recording as the case may be; writing News or Features at their own initiative, choice and judgment or at the direction of either the Assistant Editor or the News Editor;
    • Ensuring that the material so written reflects a thorough understanding of Nation’s style of journalism as defined in the editorial policy guidelines and objectives, the house style and the journalistic code of ethical journalism;
    • Researching and providing background information to make copy complete;
    • Briefing the News Editor on stories gathered and writing the selected ones within set deadlines;
    • Following news leads and maintaining close contacts with news sources;
    • Continually building his/her contacts list and demonstrating its value with consistent exclusive reports or information;
    • Responding promptly to news breaks;
    • Responsible for the correctness of facts, content and style of his/her news materials;
    • Checking the written stories to ensure that they are free from errors and libel;
    • Generating stories for use on Group multimedia platforms;
    • Filing all elements of digital story as per Digital First policy (alerts; social media; web story; multimedia) within defined deadlines;
    • Adhering to Social Media Policy as updated from time to time.

    Qualifications, Experience & skills

    • University degree;
    • Diploma in Journalism/Mass Communication;
    • 3 to 5 years relevant experience;
    • Ability to communicate both inside and outside the organisation;
    • Ability to analyse, interpret and write simplified stories from complex reports for our audiences.

    Multimedia Editor

    The Group seeks to recruit an experienced and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Multimedia Editor.

    Reporting to the Managing Editor-Broadcast with matrix reporting to the Head of News, the Multimedia Editor will be responsible for the video content on Nation. Africa and act as the newsroom bridge between print, digital and broadcasting platforms. He or she is expected to ideate, generate, edit, upload and monitor content to enhance its digital presence and reach.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Be the lead video expert in the main NMG newsroom including dealing with curated content and breaking news;
    • Develop and implement an appropriate video strategy;
    • Assign, process and distribute video content not just on digital platforms, but also on NTV and other NMG outlets;
    • Ensure all videos from bureaus and other sources are edited and distributed as required;
    • Ensure that social media accounts are populated with appropriate video content;
    • Be the champion of video monetisation in the newsroom;
    • Work with reporters, editors and writers to ensure video journalism meets high standards of story-telling, clarity, accuracy, quality, fairness, and balance, while avoiding problems of libel, defamation, and use infringement;
    • Lead collaboration on projects with other NMG platforms, especially NTV, to make the best use of resources and ensure joint coverage to deliver the greatest editorial impact;
    • Entrench creative spark and rigorous editorial quality to ensure that content connects through beautifully crafted storytelling;
    • Develop consumer-targeted web content from concept to production;
    • Maintain quality and consistency across media types and web platforms and drive increased traffic and brand visibility;
    • Supervise contributors to ensure deadlines are met;
    • Monitor and report on video presence and traffic;
    • Ensure Digital output adheres stringently to all relevant NMG policies & standards;
    • Foster an environment of productive employee relations and respond to and anticipate challenges from staff, audiences and other stakeholders;
    • Participate in editorial meetings to present the daily and weekly video content plan;
    • Interact weekly with other departments within the NMG to ensure joint coverage plans;
    • Support a digital first approach to gathering, production and publication of content;

    Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

    • Bachelor's degree in communication or its equivalent from a recognized institution;
    • Seven (7) years of relevant experience; at least one of which must be digital experience;
    • Must demonstrate professionalism & positive ability in work performance;
    • High command of English and Kiswahili languages;
    • Video and editing skills;
    • Excellent interpersonal skills;
    • Strong planning & organizational skills;
    • Ability to gather, write and edit news;
    • Adept at making editorial judgements;
    • Excellent verbal & written communication skills;
    • Have an understanding of the media law;
    • Must possess good research, interviewing and reporting skills;
    • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
    • Must possess high level of integrity;
    • Membership to a registered professional body is desired;
    • Having worked across various media platforms will be an added advantage
