    Research Assistant Nurse, Haematology/Oncology

    Job Summary

    The Clinical Research Nurse plays a crucial role in the conduct of clinical trials and research studies. Responsibilities encompass a wide range of activities aimed at ensuring the safety, well-being and compliance of research participants, as well as the integrity of the research data.

    Responsibilities

    • Identify and recruit eligible participants for Phase ≥1 clinical trials;
    • Screen potential participants based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria;
    • Explain the details of the Phase ≥1 clinical trial to potential participants;
    • Obtain informed consent from participants, ensuring they understand the risks, benefits, and procedures involved, in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and human subjects protection;
    • Administer investigational drugs or treatment/other interventions to participants according to the study protocol;
    • Monitor participants closely for any adverse reactions or side effects during and after drug administration;
    • Conduct regular assessments of vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature;
    • Document and report any abnormalities or changes in vital signs;
    • Perform physical assessments and clinical evaluations as specified in the study protocol;
    • Monitor and document any changes in participants' health status;
    • Promptly report any adverse events or serious adverse events to the study investigator and appropriate regulatory authorities;
    • Collaborate with the principal investigator, study coordinator, and other team members to ensure the smooth conduct of the trial;
    • Provide regular updates on participant status and study progress;
    • Ensure strict adherence to the study protocol and regulatory requirements;
    • Document all study-related activities accurately and in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines;
    • Collect and process blood samples for pharmacokinetic or other analysis, as specified in the study protocol.
    • Educate participants about the purpose of the Phase ≥1 clinical trial, the investigational product, and potential side effects;
    • Be trained and prepared to respond to medical emergencies that may arise during the trial;
    • Maintain detailed and accurate records of all participant interactions, assessments, and procedures;
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and assist in preparing for regulatory inspections;
    • Follow safety guidelines and procedures to protect both participants and staff involved in the study;
    • Any other assignment that is deemed appropriate for this level.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing OR Diploma in Nursing with at least 5 years’ research experience;
    • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya;
    • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS);
    • CITI/ Research training preferred;
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a nurse in a hospital setting in inpatient and/or outpatient services with demonstrated knowledge and competencies in nursing clinical practices applied to direct patient care;
    • Sound working knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCP), clinical trial processes, nursing patient care, biomaterials handling, and health safety practices;
    • Prior experience in operating basic medical equipment (e.g., infusion pump, ECG Machine, etc.).

    Research Assistant, Brain and Mind Institute

    Job Summary

    The Research Assistant in the Genetic of PTSD in African Ancestry Populations Study will be domiciled in the Brain and Mind Institute and perform the roles attached to the study. The Research Assistant will ensure smooth and successful enrollment of participants into the study. He/She will also be expected to meet study targets as well as report to the Research Manager.

     Responsibilities

    • Identify potential study participants and recruit them into the study;
    • Undertake enrolment of eligible participants based on the study protocol;
    • Document implementation lessons, challenges and possible mitigation strategies;
    • Participate in data entry and data management; and
    • Good Record keeping and management as per the study protocol.

     Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following (or closely related) fields: Public Health, Social Sciences, Project Planning and Management, Community Health or Health Systems Management.
    • Proficiency in MS Office suite of software;
    • Working knowledge of databases e.g. redcap;
    • Two (2) years of work experience in a research program;
    • Experience working in mental health projects strongly preferred;
    • Computer literate and able to use various applications; and
    • Knowledge of data collection as per Data protection guidelines.

    Clinical Nurse (Temporary), Children’s Ward

    Responsibilities:

    • Complete assessment and re-assessment of Pediatric patients to identify their care needs
    • Develop written care plans based on Pediatric patients changing needs, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of interventions
    • Actively contributes feedback during patient rounds with physicians and ensures that patients’ investigations, reports and updates on clinical information are available.
    • Administers medication safely, monitors patients, response to medication and provides medication use education to patients and families.
    • Document all assessment data, investigation results, care given, discussions with the multidisciplinary team, and family/patient interactions in an accurate, comprehensive and timely manner.
    • Perform pain assessment and initiate analgesia as per protocol.
    • Accurately administer all medication as per the treatment order sheet and in line with MMU guidelines
    • Identify patient and family education needs and implement appropriate teaching 
    • Be able to commence enteral, oral and gastric feeds as prescribed, assess absorption and elimination and give feedback as appropriate
    • Be able to recognize a patient in a pre- arrest or arrest states, and to activate  Emergency Response Team and actively participate in the resuscitation of the patient
    • Provide safe environment for patients through adherence to infection control practices and other safety policies, and perform timely safety checks on incubators, IV pumps, oxygen source, and cardiac monitors. 
    • Be accountable for judicious and efficient use of resources i.e. accurate and timely billing of ward stock drugs and consumables
    • Care for equipment through proper cleaning, storage, per shift check of the inventory and timely reporting and follow up of nonfunctional equipment to the nurse manager
    • Participate in unit based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, spot checks and skill checks
    • Ensures code pink is practiced at all times.
    • Assist in orientation of new nurses and mentoring of junior nursing staff and students
    • Provide leadership for the team and manage the unit in a given shift
    • Participate in and facilitate unit based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, spot checks and skill checks.
    • Provides basic nursing care without supervision.

    Requirements:

    • KRCHN/KRM/BScN from a recognized school of Nursing or University
    • Current Licensure with the Nursing council of Kenya
    • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in an acute care hospital.
    • Demonstrate evidence based knowledge of current practices in Paediatrics nursing
