    Research Associate, Department of Pathology

    Job Summary

    • The Department of Pathology is seeking a Research Assistant to support laboratory and bioinformatics workflows in a retrospective study investigating the prevalence, genomic diversity and antimicrobial resistance of animal -adapted Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (aMTBC) strains. The role contributes to understanding zoonotic transmission and multidrug resistance within a One Health framework.

    Responsibilities

    • Retrieve and culture archived TB isolates.
    • Perform PCR screening for RD9 gene extract  
    • Coordinate procurement and management of study supplies and maintain inventory; to ensure availability of materials.
    • Conduct flow-cell QC, sequencing runs, variant calling, phylogenetic analysis
    • Maintain lab records and isolate metadata.
    • Assist in preparation of figures, tables, and manuscript outputs.
    • Participate in stakeholder liaison meetings. 
    • Support manuscript development and contribute to dissemination activities 
    • Ensuring the confidentiality and security of the collected data.

    Requirements

    • Master of Science in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, or any other relevant qualification.
    • A minimum of two years’ experience working with clinical teams is an added advantage.
    • Measurable hands on wet lab experience working with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), including TB culturing, sample processing, biosafety level workflows, and handling of clinical isolates.
    • Proven proficiency in molecular diagnostics techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, and preparation of libraries for Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing.
    • Experience performing quality control of DNA/RNA samples, optimization of extraction protocols, and troubleshooting of lab assays in high containment environments.
    • Familiar with foundational bioinformatics approaches, including FASTQ data handling, basic command line workflows, sequence quality assessment, and introductory analysis pipelines for pathogen genomics.
    • Ability to integrate wet lab and genomics workflows by coordinating sample preparation with downstream sequencing and preliminary data interpretation.
    • Strong documentation and adherence to biosafety protocols when working with high risk pathogens.

    Volunteer - Population Health

    Job Purpose

    Support evidence synthesis activities and contribute to quality, transparency and methodological consistency.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Conduct structured database searches using predefined Boolean strategies across sources such as PubMed, Web of Science and discipline specific repositories
    • Document search strings, filters, and database settings for reproducibility
    • Perform title—abstract and full-text screening using predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria
    • Apply screening protocols in tools such as Rayyan, or EPPI-Reviewer
    • Record exclusion reasons at full-text stage according to PRISMA standards
    • Participate in inter-reviewer agreement exercises
    • Extract study characteristics, methods, exposure/outcome definitions, and effect estimates into standardized templates
    • Create evidence tables and summary matrices
    • Support narrative synthesis drafting by grouping comparable studies

    Qualifications, Experience and Skills required:

    • BSc or graduate in relevant field: Environmental health/science, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Life sciences or Information Sciences
    • Prior coursework in research methods, epidemiology or statistics
    • Evidence of academic writing experience i.e., thesis, technical reports, publications or term papers.

    Pool Physiotherapist, Rehabilitation Services

    Responsibilities:

    • Conduct initial evaluation and assessment of patients referred for physiotherapy
    • Identify treatment goals and appropriate therapy techniques and proceed to administer them
    • Conduct patient and family education
    • To conduct regular evaluation of patients to assess progress and response to therapy, revise treatment program as necessary to achieve goals
    • To evaluate the patient’s need for assistive, supportive and adaptive devices
    • Maintain daily treatment notes evaluation of patient’s progress and discharge planning notes and summaries
    • Assign patients to physiotherapy assistants or interns with laid out treatment plans and supervise their treatment
    • To control infection by observing hygiene rules
    • Maintain professional proficiency through review of current literature and attendance into continuing medical education programs in line with the physiotherapy accreditation requirements
    • To have a full knowledge of the hospital policies & procedures, protocols, guidelines and adhere to the same
    • Carry out clinical and service audits and plan and evaluate improvement of services
    • Supervising and delegating tasks to physiotherapy assistants and service attendants
    • Ensuring functionality of equipment by participating in regular maintenance/monitoring & testing to ensure minimum equipment downtime
    • Participate in planning and implementation of department goals and objectives to enable optimal performance
    • Observe and comply with environmental health and occupational safety measures
    • Participate in the implementation of quality initiative and patient safety programs
    • Responsibility for CCPC programes as may be assigned
    • Any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor or designee

    Requirements:

    • Diploma in Physiotherapy from a recognized institution
    • Registered with The Physiotherapy Council of Kenya
    • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Preferably 1-year experience as a physiotherapist
