    Legal Officer

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as a lead officer in one or more areas of concentration, and independently handles a wide range of multi-discipline and complex legal matters involving issues of international, public, private and administrative law, to include interpretation and application of instruments in that area of concentration.
    • Provide legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity, which may include those related to administration and management, institutions support, and other operational matters,
    • Advise and engage with UN internal justice system including the tribunals, represents the organization on cases before the UNDT, participates in negotiations and settlement of claims, to include establishing strategy and approach; deciding on the recommendations on the merit of claims and in connection with the reviewability of administrative decisions.
    • Review, advise on and draft complex agreements, institutional and operational modalities, or legal motions/submissions and other legal documents; develops new legal modalities to meet unique needs/circumstances.
    • Review complaints relating to prohibition of discrimination, harassment, including sexual harassment, and abuse of authority as well as retaliation investigations to determine if prohibited conduct or retaliation occurred as alleged, and provide legal support to the Conduct and Discipline focal point • Perform extensive legal research and analysis and prepares determinations, briefs, and correspondence, in particular to remediate situations where prohibited conducts or retaliation has occurred and effectuate the consultation/resolution process; provides legal advice to the unit/division.
    • Provide timely and confidential legal advice and guidance on diverse and substantive questions of considerable complexity, including monitoring trends and conducting analysis into root causes of legal dilemmas for staff.
    • Provide legal advice on the interpretation and application of staff regulations and rules in relation to investigations, including the review of administrative decisions.
    • Consult and liaise with the Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM), Office of Legal Affairs (OLA), Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), among others with regard to investigation, as necessary Corporate legal advice:
    • Review, advise on and drafts complex agreements, institutional and operational modalities with governments, non-governmental organizations and other public and private entities. or legal motions/submissions and other legal documents; develops new legal modalities to meet unique needs/circumstances

    Education

    • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law is required.
    • A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in law, preferably administrative, employment, civil and criminal law or a related area is required.
    • Experience in legal analysis, research and writing is required.
    • Experience in litigation and first-hand experience appearing and leading evidence of witnesses before a court, tribunal, or equivalent administrative boards or bodies is desirable.
    • Experience with staff regulations and rules, policies, procedures and operations of the United Nations and United Nations Internal Justice System or other similar international organization is desirable.
    • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable

    Programme Management Intern

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Early Warning and Assessments Division (EWAD) is responsible for analyzing the state of the global environment, providing early warning information and assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyze and promote international cooperation and action on the environment. This post is located in the Global Assessments Unit (GAU) of the EWAD, in Nairobi. This advertisement is seeking multiple interns to work in the Unit.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
    • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
    • Field of study: Degree in one or more of the sciences and /or a field relevant to the environment (for example, environmental studies, environmental economics, environmental assessments, environmental monitoring) and/or policy making (for example, law, economics, business), Ocean Science and Climate Science, Meteorology, Chemistry, Physics, Socio-economic Data Analysis.
    • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
    • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

    Associate Programme Management Officer (Multiple Positions)

    Responsibilities

    • Works with Scientific Assessments Branch and partners to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of global and thematic assessments, including: Monitors and analyzes specific aspects of programme/project development and the implementation of global and thematic assessments coordinated in the Branch.
    • Reviews relevant scientific, technical, and operational documents and reports. - Identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; - Identifies and tracks follow-up actions;
    • Carries out basic research on selected aspects of global and thematic assessments, operations, and other activities, to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
    • Provides substantive support for global and thematic assessment and related policy coordination and evaluation functions, including: Reviews and analysis of emerging global and thematic issues and trends, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies related to scientific reports.
    • Supports in performing consulting assignments as related to the assessments coordinated in the Branch, in collaboration with the key clients, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the team will use to manage the change.
    • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, related to the assessments coordinated in the Branch.
    • Provides administrative and substantive support to the global and thematic assessments consultative processes and other meetings, conferences, outreach activities, to include: - Participates in the organization and delivery of training workshops, seminars, participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
    • Supports the organization and coordination of international events, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection.
    • Coordinates activities related to the global and thematic assessments budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget.)
    • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
    • Performs any other duties as may be assigned.

    Education

    • Advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in any area of environmental sciences, or a related field. A first level university degree combined with an additional two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, administration or related area is required.
    • Experience in the design and coordination of environmental scientific assessments is desirable.
    • Experience at the international level is desirable
    • One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable (none if successful YPP or P-1 with a related degree).
