    Chief Medical Specialist (Diabetes & Endocrinology)

    Job Purpose

    Reporting to the Director, Medical Services through the Head of Department, the Chief Medical Specialist will be responsible and accountable for patients under his/her care.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Take the lead in clinical decision making for specialized quality inpatient and outpatient care that includes provision of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services;
    • Formulate and review health policies, strategies and guidelines;
    • Participate in formulation of national health planning;
    • Plan and manage hospital programmes;
    • Ensure adherence to health standards and guidelines;
    • Plan and manage capacity development including guiding, training, mentoring and coaching of staff in the respective specialities;
    • Evaluate provision of services within the speciality;
    • Lead committees as assigned by HOD or other appointing authority;
    • Spearhead research activities in the speciality;
    • Act as Head of Department as and when required;
    • Providing clinical guidance on the management of complicated medical or surgical cases;
    • Offering efficient and high standards of specialized clinical care to patients in the wards and speciality clinics;
    • Discussing procedures, investigation reports and prescribed treatments with patients or next of kin;
    • Performing specialized diagnostic, therapeutic and medical procedures;
    • Providing specialized training to health professionals in various medical disciplines;
    • Supervising and mentoring medical specialists in training, medical officers, medical intern and other students;
    • Performing Medico-legal duties including filling of P3 forms, court attendance and forensic duties;
    • Spearhead community diagnosis, preventive & promotive care and treatment;
    • Documentation of patient data and utilization to benefit the customer and service provider;
    • Conduct disease surveillance, develop and implement prevention and control measures;
    • Conducting biomedical research & clinical audits and implementing the findings;
    • Participating in multi-disciplinary clinical care committees; and
    • Participating in the preparation of departmental procurement plans, development of specifications and tender evaluation among other; and participating in departmental budget preparation.

    Qualifications and Work Experience

    • Master’s degree in relevant clinical discipline from a recognized institution;
    • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent;
    • Registration Certificate by relevant professional body;
    • Specialist recognition certificate from the Medical Practitioners’ and Dentist Council;
    • Annual Specialist Practice licence from the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council;
    • Sub-specialization in the relevant clinical disciplines;
    • Professional Indemnity Cover;
    • At least two (2) publications in medical-related fields;
    • Leadership/ Management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized institution and
    • Served for a minimum period of ten (10) years relevant work experience, five (5) of which should have been at the level of senior medical specialist or comparable position.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Masters of Medicine in Internal Medicine or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council;
    • Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB.) or its equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council;
    • Certification/ Fellowship in Neurology from a recognized institution;
    • Specialist recognition certificate in Neurology from the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentist Council. However, physicians with interest in Neurology and have finished Mmed in Internal Medicine and are undergoing pre-KMPDC registration attachment are encouraged to apply;
    • Registration Certificate by the Medical Practitioners & Dentist Council;
    • Valid practicing license in Neurology from Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council;

    • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from a recognized institution by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council;
    • Registration Certificate by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council;
