    Boiler / Mechanical Technician

    Job description

    • The Boiler / Mechanical Technician is responsible for the operation, inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of hospital mechanical systems to ensure continuous, safe, and efficient operation of critical infrastructure supporting patient care. The role is responsible for maintaining steam generation systems, hot water systems, pumps, compressors, and other mechanical assets in compliance with hospital policies, safety regulations, and healthcare accreditation standards.

    Responsibility

    • Boiler and Steam System Operations - Operate and monitor hospital boilers and associated steam systems, perform routine inspections of boilers, burners, pumps, valves, steam traps, pressure vessels, and piping, monitor boiler operating parameters including pressure, temperature, fuel consumption, and water levels, maintain boiler water treatment systems and monitor water quality, respond promptly to boiler alarms and operational abnormalities, Ensure uninterrupted steam supply for hospital operations.
    • Mechanical Systems Maintenance - Inspect, maintain and repair: Boilers and calorifiers, Hot water generation systems, Steam distribution systems, Condensate return systems, Water pumps and booster pumps, Pressure vessels, Mechanical piping systems, Mechanical Trolleys, beds, among other mechanical systems
    • Preventive Maintenance - Perform scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with maintenance plans, Lubricate, adjust, clean, and service mechanical equipment, replace worn mechanical components before failure, conduct condition monitoring and report deterioration, ensure preventive maintenance records are completed accurately.
    • Corrective Maintenance - Diagnose mechanical faults, repair or replace defective mechanical components, restore equipment to full operational status with minimal downtime, escalate major failures requiring specialized intervention.
    • Utilities Monitoring - Monitor and record: Boiler operating parameters, Steam pressure, Fuel consumption, Water consumption, Hot water temperatures, Pump performance, Mechanical equipment operating hours, Utility plant performance, report abnormalities promptly.
    • Safety and Compliance - Ensure compliance with: Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Boiler and Pressure Vessel Regulations, Fire safety requirements, Environmental regulations, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) requirements, Hospital engineering policies, JCIA facility management standards, Manufacturer operating instructions, always use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintain safe work practices.
    • Documentation - Maintain accurate records of: Daily boiler log sheets, Preventive maintenance activities, Corrective maintenance work, Utility readings, Equipment inspections, Spare parts used, Breakdown reports
    • Emergency Response - Respond to emergency mechanical failures, Support hospital emergency utility restoration, participate in emergency preparedness drills, Assist during utility outages and disaster response.
    • Spare Parts and Tools - Maintain mechanical tools in good condition, report damaged tools, monitor availability of critical spare parts, assist in identifying required replacement parts.

    Qualifications

    • Diploma or Craft Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Plant Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Production Engineering, or a related technical field.
    • Professional Qualifications - Valid Boiler Attendant Certificate or Boiler Operator Certification is an added advantage, Registration with relevant professional or technical bodies is desirable.
    • Minimum 3 years experience maintaining mechanical plant or utility systems.
    • Hospital experience is highly desirable.
    • Experience operating boilers and steam systems is an added advantage.

    Maintenance Supervisor

    Job description

    • The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising, and monitoring all building, utilities, and infrastructure maintenance activities within the hospital to ensure a safe, reliable, and compliant healthcare environment. The role ensures preventive and corrective maintenance of hospital facilities, utilities, and engineering systems while supporting uninterrupted clinical services and compliance with statutory, safety and accreditation requirements.

    Responsibility

    • Maintenance Operations - Plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate daily maintenance activities, ensure timely completion of preventive and corrective maintenance work, monitor maintenance requests and ensure agreed response times are achieved, coordinate emergency maintenance activities to minimize service interruptions, conduct routine inspections of hospital buildings and infrastructure.
    • Utilities Management - Oversee maintenance and performance of: Electrical distribution systems, backup generators and Solar system, UPS systems, Water supply systems, Boreholes, Water treatment systems, Hot water systems and Boilers, Medical air compressors, Vacuum systems, Medical gas infrastructure, HVAC systems, Ventilation systems, Fire detection and suppression systems, Lifts and elevators, Sewage and drainage systems, Any other Maintenance system
    • Preventive Maintenance - Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules, ensure maintenance activities are completed according to established plans, maintain maintenance records and history, identify recurring failures and implement corrective actions, recommend equipment replacement based on lifecycle assessments.
    • Staff Supervision - Supervise maintenance technicians and artisans, allocate work based on priorities and staff competencies, conduct toolbox meetings, monitor productivity and quality of work, identify training needs and mentor junior staff, Participate in recruitment and performance appraisals.
    • Contractor Management - Coordinate outsourced maintenance services, verify quality of contractor work, ensure contractors comply with hospital safety policies, Review contractor service reports, Verify completed work before certification for payment.
    • Safety and Compliance - Ensure compliance with: Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Fire safety regulations, Environmental regulations, Energy management requirements, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) requirements, Hospital engineering policies, JCIA facility management standards, Participate in safety inspections, risk assessments, emergency preparedness activities, and incident investigations.
    • Project Support - Support renovation and infrastructure projects, monitor contractor progress, participate in inhouse project planning meetings, ensure engineering standards are maintained during projects, participate in commissioning and handover of completed works.
    • Inventory and Asset Management - Monitor maintenance tools and equipment, manage spare parts inventory, recommend procurement of maintenance materials, monitor stock levels and prevent shortages, Ensure proper storage of maintenance materials.
    • Documentation - Maintain accurate records including: Preventive maintenance schedules, Work orders, Maintenance logs, Utility consumption records, Contractor reports, Inspection reports, Incident reports, Equipment history, Compliance records
    • Budget Support - Assist in preparing annual maintenance budgets, monitor expenditure against approved budgets, recommend cost-saving initiatives, Identify opportunities for energy efficiency and resource optimization.

    • Experience in a hospital or healthcare environment is highly desirable.
    • Experience managing contractors and multidisciplinary maintenance teams.
