    Legal Advocate

    Job summary 
    The Legal Advocate will support the Legal Practice Manager in systematizing the support provided to indigent members of the community in handling cases in the Justice Defenders Community Legal Office. 
    Main duties and responsibilities 

    • Under the direct guidance and supervision of the legal Practice Manager, the Legal Advocate will be responsible for representing Justice Defenders clients in court and supporting paralegals in offering legal services in the community. 
    • Offer legal services and representation to Justice Defenders clients. 
    • The Legal Advocate is responsible for supporting the implementation of the charity’s strategic initiatives around our Community Legal Office.
    • These include: assisting in managing new offices and ensuring that the operations are effective and efficient; 
    • Ensuring activities are managed well; and working at all times within our policies and procedures. 
    • He/she will engage as assigned, in appropriate committees, working groups and other activities to maintain strong and productive external networks. 
    • Responsible for ensuring that standards and quality of legal aid delivery is maintained and developed. 
    • Support the Legal Practice Manager in creating training materials and manuals and help to conduct necessary trainings and workshops required for the efficient and effective implementation of activities in the Legal Offices. 
    • Lead on the filing, follow up and recording of cases, to ensure timely outcomes. 
    • Support the research on relevant cases and other supporting authorities/material 
    • Required to enable the provision of quality advice within the legal office. 
    • Support in the carrying out of research to understand the current situation including: 
    • the prevailing challenges in accessing justice in the project sites; recommend changes and improvements, work with key influencers in the community to inform the design of relevant interventions to address identified gaps. 

    Qualifications and experience 

    • An honors Degree in law and a valid practicing certificate in Kenya. 
    • Enrolled advocate of the high court of Kenya with 5 years’ experience post admission. 
    • At least 4 years’ experience in criminal law practice. 
    • Proficiency in working with Microsoft office suite 
    • Proven ability to take initiatives in developing relationships, initiatives and options for action that might benefit the legal offices.

    Legal Practice Intern (2 positions)

    Duties and responsibilities 

    • Maintain supplies by checking stationery stock to determine inventory levels; anticipating requirements; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt; stocking items; delivering supplies to work stations. 
    • Ensure proper filing of Legal Practice department minutes and accountability documents. 
    • Ensure procurement process and procedures are well done. 
    • Provides Quality Control checks on Purchase Orders to ensure correct budget line allocation and that all information and supporting documents are adequate and correct, prepares LPO’s and send to supplier 
    • Ensure that all requisitions, accountability and support documents are properly filed and cancelled “paid” 
    • Ensure Assets are well maintained 
    • Reviewing applications for legal assistance from JD prison legal offices 
    • Conducting interviews with clients to identify potential legal issues and to obtain necessary information 
    • Making direct contact with our volunteer advocates to assist with the closing of cases 
    • Participate in conducting legal research and drafting of court documents for clients 

    Required skills and experience

    • Persons with experience in paralegal work or who have worked in a prison set up have an added advantage

    Finance Intern (One position)

    Job summary 
    The Finance intern will support the Finance and Grants Manager in preparing payment vouchers, ensuring requisitions, accountability and support documents are properly filed, updating petty cash vouchers and generating NHIF & NSSF by-product numbers and ensuring they are paid on time. 
     

    Main duties and responsibilities 

    • Prepare payments and payment vouchers to support payments. 
    • Ensure that all requisitions, accountability and support documents are properly filed. 
    • Updating petty cash schedules and ensuring they reconcile with the Mpesa statement. 
    • Assist in verification of accountability against funds advanced. 
    • Assist in preparation for organizational audits.
    • Assist in generation of NHIF and NSSF by-product numbers and ensuring they are paid on time. 
    • Any other finance related tasks as may be assigned from time to time 

    Qualifications and Experience 

    • Bachelor's Degree in Commerce, Finance or Accounting option. 
    • Qualified CPA part II or equivalent in ACCA. 
    • Keen and pays attention to detail. 
    • Ability to work well within a team. 
    • Possess Excel spreadsheet and word-processing programs at a highly proficient level. 
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in performing of the duties.

    Community legal office paralegal (Two positions)

    Job Summary 
    JD is seeking to employ two paralegals to support the development and implementation of a legal aid expansion strategy, and to work in the JD community legal office. 
    Under the direct supervision of the legal practice manager, the paralegals will collaborate with colleagues in the JD community justice center, JD Advocates, paralegals in the JD prison legal offices, and secretariat staff. As such an ability to establish and sustain effective working relationships with colleagues and counterparts is essential.
     

    Duties and responsibilities
    The paralegals will: 

    • Provide legal aid and assistance to walk-in clients 
    • Contribute to the training, and awareness creation on basic law, Alternative 
    • Dispute Resolution(ADR), and advocacy using appropriate adult-oriented training and coaching techniques 
    • Support in monitoring program implementation 
    • Support effective program documentation practices, and draft regular program reports 
    • Contribute to the evaluation of program effectiveness and support the continued development of improved program approaches 

    Required skills and experience 

    • Formal training in paralegal studies. Degree/Diploma in Law is an added advantage 
    • Knowledge of criminal law and procedure. 
    • Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience in the provision of legal aid and assistance 
    • Experience in training community actors in criminal law, Human rights , ADR, and advocacy. Prior experience supporting a community-based paralegal program is desirable 
    • Experience with informal justice systems and ADR mechanisms 
    • Experience working with community leaders, police, prosecutors, and other actors in the criminal justice system 
    • Experience developing and implementing legal aid activities 
    • Understanding of the rule of law in preventing and protecting vulnerable members of the community.
