    Staff Site Reliability Engineer (Traffic)/DevOps

    Summary

    We are looking for a Staff Site Reliability Engineer to support and develop the platform serving the world’s favorite encyclopedia to millions of people around the globe. Wikimedia’s Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team is principally responsible for ensuring our global top-15 website, our public-facing services, and underlying infrastructure is healthy and developing further in support of Wikimedia’s mission.

    We apply the best software engineering practices in our operations, and we publish all of our documentation, code, and configuration as open source.

    We are a globally distributed and diverse team of engineers with a drive to explore, experiment, and embrace new technologies.     You are responsible for:

    • Performing day-to-day operational/DevOps tasks on Wikimedia’s public facing infrastructure (deployment, maintenance, configuration, troubleshooting)
    • Implementing and utilizing configuration management and deployment tools (Puppet, Kubernetes)
    • Leading continuous improvement, by automating the installation, configuration and maintenance of services on our platform
    • Assisting in the architectural design of new services and making them operate at scale
    • Assisting in or leading incident response, diagnosis, and follow-up on system outages and alerts across Wikimedia’s production infrastructure
    • Share our values and work in accordance with them

    Skills and Experience:

    • 8+ years experience in an SRE/Operations/DevOps role as part of a team
    • Experience with shell and any scripting languages used in an SRE context (Python, Go, Bash, Ruby, etc., we use primarily Python), and configuration management tools (Puppet, Ansible, etc.)
    • Experience with C, C++, Golang or Rust
    • Experience with distributed caching systems: including their underlying algorithms and how to optimize their performance.
    • A thorough, protocol-level understanding of TCP/IP, HTTP, and TLS
    • Experience with package management on Linux systems (we use Debian)
    • Comfortable with Open Source configuration management and orchestration tools (Puppet, Ansible, Chef, SaltStack)
    • Good Linux system level skills 
    • History of automating tasks and processes, identifying process gaps, and finding automation opportunities
    • Strong English language skills and ability to work independently, as an effective part of a globally distributed team

    Additionally, we’d love it if you have:

    • Experience with the use, maintenance and configuration of monitoring, metrics and logging infrastructure (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Icinga/Nagios, etc.)
    • Experience with high-performance HTTP(S) caching proxy software, such as Varnish, Envoy Proxy, Apache Traffic Server, Nginx or HAProxy
    • Experience with Linux kernel tuning for high traffic loads
    • Developing/contributing to Free and Open Source software, or being part of an open-source community
    • Experience with defining cross-team SLOs and their implementation

    Web Manager

    As Web Manager, you will serve as the lead strategist and advisor on all websites owned and operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, primarily the Foundation’s public website, wikimediafoundation.org. (Please note that this role is not responsible for the management of Wikipedia and other free knowledge Wikimedia projects.) 

    You will be responsible for maintaining and improving wikimediafoundation.org, with a focus on leveraging the website to reach and engage key global audiences — including donors, partners, potential volunteers, and advocates — with the Foundation’s mission and work. Further, you will lead efforts to unify our approach for maintaining the web channels operated by the Foundation for external communications, and streamline and improve our processes.

    You are responsible for:

    Managing, maintaining, and enhancing wikimediafoundation.org 

    • Developing the roadmap and strategic vision for wikimediafoundation.org, the Foundation’s public website, aligned with Communications Department objectives 
    • Serving as the main point of contact for website content updates, including standing up new webpages and adding content to existing pages, occasionally during time-sensitive situations
    • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders with design, technical, and editorial expertise to create or update web content 
    • Monitoring and ensuring website usability, health, performance, and security 
    • Troubleshooting website as needed, identifying and solving issues through collaboration with colleagues and vendors 
    • Creating and maintaining documentation about website practices 

    Leading special website projects 

    • Managing projects from conceptualization to implementation, including: closely coordinating with colleagues and vendors for editorial content, design, and technical support; overseeing project timing and costs; proactively identifying project needs and solutions; and ensuring successful execution
    • Driving upcoming projects, which may include a refresh of the content on the wikimediafoundation.org homepage, microsite integrations, new campaign page development, and feature enhancements 

    Serving as a strategic advisor on Foundation web channels  

    • Developing a unified approach for the strategy and maintenance of all web channels owned by the Wikimedia Foundation, with a focus on streamlining resources, improving processes, and achieving impact
    • Providing subject matter expertise for all initiatives related to wikimediafoundation.org and other Foundation-owned websites 
    • Fostering relationships with internal stakeholders, helping raise awareness and understanding of our website best practices and processes 
    • Identifying ways to advance our commitments to diversity, equity, and belonging within Foundation-owned websites 
    • Guiding decisions on web standards, compliance, and improvements
    • Producing regular metrics reports and sharing insights to evaluate our impact and guide our strategy

    Overseeing website resourcing 

    • Managing relationships with external web vendors, and collaborating with vendor strategists, business analysts, UI/UX designers, and front and backend developers to improve and expand the Foundation’s websites
    • Shaping and monitoring the Foundation’s website budget, as well as making recommendations on how to prioritize projects 
    • Proactively identifying website opportunities and resource needs 

    Skills and Experience:

    • 5+ years experience in website management 
    • Experience and thorough understanding of WordPress, HTML, and CSS
    • Track record of successfully leading complex web projects with several stakeholders 
    • An understanding of and passion for the web as a strategic communications channel
    • Strong organizational and project management skills
    • Ability to resolve a wide range of challenges in creative ways

    Manager, Global Travel and Convening

    Summary

    The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Manager of Travel and Convening to join our team, reporting to the Controller, Vice President.  As the Manager of Travel and Convening, you will be responsible for managing a team of travel, meeting, and event professionals, as well as collaborating with cross-functional business partners to deliver best-in-class customer support to further advance the mission of the foundation.  The team collaborates with and serves the internal staff community, Wikimedia community and partners, including volunteers, editors/contributors and business partners.  

    The position will lead with a resourceful mindset, and will review, reshape, and deliver a global travel, meetings and events vision that prioritizes employee experience, DEI initiatives and customer service. This role will manage a global team of travel, meeting, and event professionals, as well as collaborate with cross-functional business partners to deliver best-in-class customer support to further advance the mission of the foundation. As the Wikimedia Foundation and the global volunteer community continue to grow, this role will spearhead cross-functional engagement to advance scalable travel and convening strategies, partnering with Legal, Finance, Talent & Culture and other departments across the organization.

    You are responsible for:

    • Leading a team managing travel arrangements, event facilities, and hotel selection for the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia community events
    • Drive and reshape Wikimedia Foundation's global travel and convening program strategy in alignment with WMF culture and values
    • Work closely with Global Workplace and Experience colleagues, cross-functional partner teams, functional leaders, and leadership to ensure that travel, meetings, events, and experience to deliver a seamless journey experience
    • Think strategically and forecast overall team requirements, budget, and resources needed to execute all functions
    • Overseeing the team’s relationships with vendors, e.g., agency services, airlines, hotels, credit card providers, and technology vendors; negotiate contracts and ensure vendor compliance
    • Partnering with ISOS and Risk Management on physical safety, security, and overall duty of care requirements
    • Providing written and verbal communication with business and stakeholder groups within the organization so that business groups may make informed decisions on its travel and event needs
    • Provide transparent and timely updates to stakeholders regarding best practices, processes and policies to support travelers’ needs
    • Ensure travel and events are in compliance with the foundation’s travel, procurement, and spend policies, make sound judgment, and use prudence in making decisions that protect travelers and contain costs
    • Develop and maintain documentation of existing processes, policies and activities, and updates.
    • Gather data and reporting for analysis and reduction to achieve environmental, and financial targets 
    • Champion and promote WMF’s travel and convening program by utilizing various internal communication channels and departmental outreach
    • Travel is 20-25%, but flexible

    Skills and Experience:

    • Have a minimum of 8+ years of related leadership experience in corporate travel management with global travel management, meetings, and event experience
    • Have a proven record of corporate meeting and event planning and operations experience
    • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written with all levels within the organization and its community
    • Experience managing and directing teams located in multiple geographic areas, working across time zones in a global environment. 
    • Drive innovation on the team with a willingness to balance of "big picture" thinking with tactical execution
    • Experience with negotiating travel related contracts
    • Ability to independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes
    • Are passionate about employee experience, customer feedback and service, and working cross-functionally for the best solutions for the organization
    • Ability to drive innovation and process improvement, both tactical and forward thinking using your resourcefulness and creative problem solving skills
    • Bachelor’s degree in related field or the equivalent in relevant work experience
    • Good understanding of complex international airfares, including routing, fares and pricing, and travel documentation requirements
    • Proficient use of Concur, Google Suite, Slack, Coupa (or equivalent) and other travel software
    • Prioritize transparency and communication for a seamless customer experience
